Nintendo says development of GameChat began around 2020, before the Switch 2 hardware was finalized. To test how chat and gameplay could work together on a console, the team built a prototype using a specially configured Nintendo Switch development unit—not a feature that owners could use on retail Switch consoles. Nintendo’s account also explains why screen sharing became central to the feature: it could make even a single-player game a shared experience.

When did Nintendo start developing GameChat?

Sumikazu Ono, who oversaw development of Switch 2 built-in features, said Nintendo began thinking about the next console’s built-in features around 2020. Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto had asked the team to consider capabilities that could help distinguish the successor. One proposal was voice chat built into the console, with a “student lounge” feel: a place for friends to play, watch, or simply spend time together.

Ono described the timing this way: “I believe development began around 2020 when we started thinking about what we could do with built-in features in the next hardware.” That means GameChat’s development started during early planning for the successor, not only after the final Switch 2 hardware was in place. Nintendo’s interview does not give a more precise start date.

What was the Switch 1 GameChat prototype?

First, the team tested chat on PC

Nintendo’s team initially made a PC prototype for voice and video chat alongside games. The experiments helped the developers recognize the appeal of sharing game screens, but a PC could not show how a game and chat would coexist on a console.

Then it moved to a specially configured Switch development unit

The team integrated chat into a development machine based on the original Nintendo Switch. This was an engineering prototype, not GameChat released for retail Switch consoles. Nintendo says the original Switch was not designed to run games, voice chat, video chat, and screen sharing together. The prototype therefore relied on development-only resources and a system configuration that was not viable as a consumer product.

In Nintendo’s English developer interview, technical director Eiji Tokunaga said the experimental Switch console had increased memory and an improved CPU. He said the first prototype took about six months to complete, but the transition from prototype to final product took much longer: “However…taking it from prototype to final product took an absolute age.” The six-month figure refers to the initial prototype, not the whole development of GameChat.

Why did Nintendo add screen sharing to GameChat?

Screen sharing changed the idea from a way to talk while playing into a way to share what someone was playing. Nintendo’s developers described sharing a puzzle game so colleagues could discover it, and showing a single-player game to a friend who could offer help with a puzzle. Those uses suggested that chat and shared gameplay could add a social layer even when a game did not have its own multiplayer mode.

Ono said, “The concept of the student lounge matched the idea of the built-in voice chat feature the team had in mind.” The developers’ examples show how that concept extended beyond multiplayer: friends could watch, recommend, or advise on a game together. Nintendo Switch 2 producer Kawamoto later reflected that “Various professionals went through trial and error to achieve the best outcome, and I think it turned out much better than the original proposal I came up with.”

What GameChat supports on Nintendo Switch 2

GameChat is a Switch 2 feature. Nintendo Support says a room can include up to 12 people, with up to four people sharing video and/or their game screen at the same time. Chat combines voice or video with the option to share gameplay; a camera is not required for voice chat.

GameChat and GameShare are separate features. Nintendo says GameChat works with Switch 2-compatible games. GameShare, which lets people share and play supported games, works only with compatible titles that include a special program. GameChat’s screen-sharing capability does not mean GameShare is available for every game.
