Celluloid is a graphical Linux video player built around mpv: its GTK interface handles opening and organizing media, while mpv provides playback through the libmpv client API. It can suit readers who want a desktop interface without giving up many of mpv’s configuration options.
What is Celluloid?
Celluloid, formerly called GNOME MPV, is a GTK frontend for mpv. The project says Celluloid communicates with mpv through the client API provided by libmpv, so it adds a graphical control layer rather than replacing mpv’s playback engine. The project describes its aim as ease of use alongside a high level of configurability (Celluloid project repository; project website).
That distinction matters in practice: you can use Celluloid’s menus and playlist, while drawing on mpv’s options and much of its configuration ecosystem. It is not a separate playback engine, and the cited project materials do not establish a performance advantage over other mpv frontends.
How to install Celluloid on Linux
Use your distribution’s package manager if Celluloid is available in its repositories. The project also documents Flatpak, Snap, and a Meson/Ninja source build; package availability and versions can vary by distribution and release. Consult the official repository for current requirements and instructions.

A source build requires the project’s build and runtime dependencies, including GTK, libadwaita, mpv, and other libraries. Check the repository’s dependency list for the version you intend to build rather than relying on minimum versions from older instructions.
Open media and manage a playlist
You can open files or URIs from the command line, through the file chooser, with Open Location, or by dragging and dropping them into the player. Celluloid also supports adding items to a playlist by drag and drop.

The playlist is hidden by default. Open it from the Playlist menu or press F9. From there, drag items to reorder them, select an item and press Delete to remove it, or expand an online playlist into its individual entries. The project documents these controls in its repository.
Can Celluloid use mpv.conf and input.conf?
Yes. Celluloid exposes configuration through its Preferences dialog and supports an mpv.conf-style configuration file. In the MPV Configuration preferences, select the file and enable it. For less common settings, the project says values are stored in dconf.

You can also enter options in the Extra MPV Options field using mpv command-line syntax. When launching Celluloid from the command line, pass an mpv option with the --mpv- prefix. For example, Debian documents the form --mpv-MPVOPTION=VALUE (Debian Celluloid manpage).
Celluloid can use most mpv user scripts as-is. A script that adds keybindings may conflict with Celluloid’s existing bindings; remap those keys in an input.conf-style configuration if needed. Additional keybindings use mpv’s input.conf syntax.

Command-line options for existing instances
Debian’s Celluloid manpage documents options for controlling how a command interacts with a running instance:
--new-windowopens a new window when another instance is already running.--enqueueappends specified files or URIs to an existing instance.--mpv-MPVOPTION=VALUEsets an mpv option.--versionprints the release version.
These are documented command-line behaviors; check the manpage installed with your distribution’s package for the options available in that version.

Does Celluloid work on Wayland?
The Celluloid project lists Wayland support, as well as MPRIS2 support for desktop media controls (project website). That establishes project support, but does not guarantee identical behavior across every Linux distribution, compositor, display setup, or package build.
Who should choose Celluloid?
Celluloid is a practical choice if you want a GTK-based graphical player and value access to mpv configuration, scripts, and keybindings. If you prefer a terminal-driven workflow or another desktop toolkit, a different mpv interface may fit better. The available project sources describe Celluloid’s features but do not provide a controlled comparison or benchmark against other players.
