If you see “your account cannot be created at this time,” first check Apple’s System Status and your internet connection, then update your device and try creating the account through a different Apple app or at account.apple.com. Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account, but the older wording may still appear in error messages and searches.
Try these fixes in order
- Check whether Apple’s services are available. Open Apple System Status and look for an issue affecting account creation or related services. If there is an outage, wait for Apple to resolve it before trying again.
- Confirm your internet connection. Open a few ordinary websites. If they do not load, reconnect to the internet. If they do, retry using cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. If Apple services still cannot connect, check whether a VPN or third-party security app is interfering.
- Update your device and Apple apps. Install available updates for iOS or iPadOS, macOS, Windows, or Android, as applicable, and update Apple apps you are using. Apple lists outdated software as a possible reason account creation can fail.
- Switch to another creation method. On an Apple device, try Settings or System Settings. You can also try the App Store, Apple Music or Apple TV on Windows, or account.apple.com. Apple recommends using another method if the message persists.
- Check the email address or phone number. If Apple says it is unavailable or cannot be used, an Apple Account already uses it. Use a different identifier, or reset the password for the existing account instead of creating another one.
- Retry later. If websites load and Apple’s services appear available, wait and try again. Apple advises trying again later when you can open web pages but still cannot create an account.
What to expect when creating an Apple Account
The creation flow asks for your birthday, name, email address, a strong password, country or region, and phone verification. Two-factor authentication is set up during or after creation. Some flows may ask for payment information; Apple says you can choose None in the App Store and Mac flows.

Creating an account for a child
In most countries and regions, a child under 13 cannot create an Apple Account without help from a parent or guardian through Family Sharing. The minimum age differs in some regions. Check Apple’s regional rules for Apple Accounts for the applicable threshold.
Age confirmation in certain regions
Apple lists age-confirmation requirements for some services or account actions in Australia, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Texas in the United States. Consult Apple’s regional rules if you are in one of these locations.

For account creation in China mainland, Apple may require a phone number with the +86 country code for verification.
Accounts for employees
For an organization managing accounts for employees, Apple directs businesses to Managed Apple Accounts through Apple Business, rather than creating multiple personal accounts.
