Netronome’s NFP-6xxx was a programmable network flow processor announced on June 5, 2012. Intel manufactured it using a 22nm 3D Tri-Gate process and provided back-end design services. Netronome specified throughput of up to 200Gbps, alongside 216 programmable processing cores and 100 accelerators. Contemporary coverage described it as having an ARM core, but the available product and foundry descriptions do not establish precisely what that core did.

What was the NFP-6xxx?

The NFP-6xxx was Netronome’s sixth-generation network flow processor, a chip designed to handle packet and flow processing in high-performance networking equipment. Netronome announced it on June 5, 2012, targeting carrier networks, cybersecurity systems, software-defined networking (SDN), mobile networks, virtualized data centers and cloud applications. The company said customers could expect availability in mid-2013.

Rather than being a general-purpose server processor, it was a programmable networking device combining processing cores with specialized accelerators and high-bandwidth interfaces. Netronome listed use cases including intrusion detection and prevention, next-generation firewalls, OpenFlow, SSL inspection, IPsec, IP/MPLS carrier networking, data-loss prevention, network forensics, deep packet inspection, application identification, stateful load balancing, test and measurement, intelligent network taps and high-frequency trading.

What did Intel contribute?

Intel manufactured the NFP-6xxx using its 22nm 3D Tri-Gate process and supplied back-end design services. Intel’s foundry presentation quoted Netronome CEO Niel Viljoen describing the chip as a fully featured 200Gbps network flow processor that used the power, area and performance advantages of Intel’s 22nm process; it also said Intel’s Foundry team provided back-end design services to deliver functional silicon. This describes a manufacturing and design-services relationship, not an Intel-branded processor.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The announcement was a notable change from Netronome’s earlier lineage. EDN reported in 2010 that the company’s NFP-32xx followed its licensed versions of Intel IXP processors. That earlier family had 40 RISC cores, cryptography and public-key infrastructure engines, content-addressable memory, PCIe Gen2 and Interlaken interfaces, and was aimed at core switches, security appliances and virtualized server clusters. The NFP-6xxx was a later, substantially larger implementation on Intel’s 22nm process.

How fast and capable was it?

Netronome announced a throughput target of 200Gbps for the NFP-6xxx. Its other published specifications describe the processing resources and interfaces that supported networking workloads:

Specification Netronome’s 2012 announcement
Programmable processing cores 216
Hardware accelerators 100
On-chip storage More than 30MB
External memory Six-channel DDR3 operating at 2133MHz
Processor I/O 720Gbps through SERDES, Ethernet, Interlaken and PCIe Gen3 interfaces

These are vendor-published specifications, not results from an independent comparison. Netronome also claimed the chip delivered more than six times the packet-processing performance at less than half the power of 28nm CMOS alternatives. That comparison was attributed to the company in contemporary reporting; it should be treated as a vendor claim, not an independently verified benchmark.

What did the ARM core do?

Contemporary reporting framed the chip as a flow processor with an ARM core. However, the available product announcement and Intel foundry presentation do not explain the ARM core’s exact role, how software used it, or how it interacted with the 216 programmable processing cores and 100 accelerators. It is therefore not possible to say from these descriptions whether it handled management, control-plane tasks or another function.

What does “flow processor” mean here?

In networking, a flow is traffic grouped by characteristics such as source and destination addresses, ports and protocol. A flow processor can inspect and act on packets in that context rather than treating every packet as an unrelated unit. The NFP-6xxx’s programmability, accelerators and networking interfaces were intended to support services such as firewalling, encryption, deep packet inspection and load balancing. Netronome described its aim as advancing network services from packet-oriented to flow-aware processing.

How should its performance claims be read?

The 200Gbps figure was Netronome’s announced throughput target, and the 720Gbps figure was its stated aggregate processor I/O. They describe different measures: the first is the advertised processing throughput, while the latter is the vendor’s figure for I/O across listed interfaces. Neither figure by itself establishes performance for every application or configuration. The announcement does not provide a balanced independent benchmark against competing processors.
