MSI’s Z790 Project Zero Plus demonstration showed how CAMM2 could fit desktop memory into one flat module rather than four conventional DDR5 DIMM slots. It is a showcase, not proof that CAMM2 works in ordinary desktop motherboards or that DIMMs are being replaced. The format could improve cooler clearance and compact-PC layouts, but availability, pricing and mainstream adoption remain unsettled.
What is CAMM2 memory?
CAMM2 means Compression Attached Memory Module 2. Unlike a conventional desktop DIMM that plugs vertically into a slot, CAMM2 is a flat module secured against a compression connector. MSI’s June 4, 2024 announcement described a connector on the module’s back that presses into a thin socket. MSI’s announcement says one CAMM2 module can provide dual-channel memory and support up to 128GB per module.
Tom’s Hardware reported that MSI’s desktop demonstration mounted the module horizontally and held it in place with four screws. It also reported a 64% smaller footprint than typical DDR5 SO-DIMM laptop configurations; that comparison is about laptop SO-DIMM layouts, not a measured reduction against desktop DIMMs. Tom’s Hardware’s report covers the installation and footprint claim.
Why test CAMM2 in a desktop?
A flat module can reduce the height and space taken up by memory near the CPU socket. TechSpot noted that the MSI design uses shorter traces to the CPU, while removing tall slot-mounted DIMMs may leave more clearance for a CPU cooler and improve airflow around the socket. These are layout advantages; they do not by themselves establish that a PC will run faster. TechSpot’s coverage describes the desktop layout.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The strongest potential fit is a small-form-factor PC, where saved volume may ease cooling and component placement. PCWorld reported that MSI linked CAMM2 with higher DDR5 speeds and lower latency, while Asus emphasized the ability to fit more memory components in a compact module. Those potential benefits depend on the particular module and platform, rather than following automatically from the connector format. PCWorld’s report discusses the manufacturers’ rationale.
Does CAMM2 make a desktop PC faster?
Not necessarily. CAMM2 is a physical memory format, not a guarantee of higher performance. Shorter traces can support a design with higher speeds or lower latency, but real performance depends on the module’s specification, motherboard, processor memory controller, firmware and configuration. A CAMM2 PC is not automatically faster than a comparable DDR5 DIMM system.

The named products and figures announced in 2024 illustrate the difference between a demonstration and a shipping specification:
| Product or announcement | Published details | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Kingston FURY Impact DDR5 CAMM2 | DDR5-5600, with 32GB and 64GB capacities planned, as reported at Computex 2024 | A demonstrated module and planned capacities, not current retail stock. Tom’s Hardware |
| TEAMGROUP CAMM2 DDR5 | Consumer DDR5-7200 and industrial DDR5-6400 specifications; the company planned a Q1 2025 series release | Announced specifications and schedule, not confirmation of current availability. TEAMGROUP announcement, November 1, 2024 |
| TEAMGROUP DDR5-7200 CAMM2 test results | Up to 108,000MB/s write, 106,000MB/s copy, 117,000MB/s read and 55ns latency, under TEAMGROUP’s stated test conditions | Vendor-published results for its design under those conditions; they are not a direct comparison with a desktop DIMM system. TEAMGROUP announcement |
| MSI CAMM2 capacity claim | Up to 128GB per module | MSI’s stated support figure; it is not a claim that the showcased Kingston module had that capacity. MSI announcement, June 4, 2024 |
Is CAMM2 replacing desktop DIMMs?
No replacement is established. MSI and Kingston presented the Z790 Project Zero Plus at Computex 2024 as a desktop CAMM2 demonstration using one module instead of four conventional DDR5 DIMM slots. That proves a board was shown in this configuration; it does not show that existing DIMM motherboards can accept CAMM2, or that desktop makers are abandoning DIMMs. The cited announcements do not establish mainstream adoption, current pricing or broad retail supply.

Which motherboards support CAMM2?
The named desktop example is MSI’s Z790 Project Zero Plus, shown with Kingston at Computex 2024. The announcement does not establish compatibility for other Z790 boards—or for ordinary DDR5 DIMM sockets. CAMM2 requires a board designed with the appropriate connector and physical mounting arrangement.
Before buying a module, confirm that the motherboard maker explicitly lists CAMM2 support for the exact board and memory generation. Then check the board’s current BIOS support, the qualified or supported module details, and whether the module is sold in your region. Do not infer compatibility from the CAMM2 name alone or from a board’s support for DDR5 DIMMs.

Can you buy Kingston FURY Impact CAMM2 RAM now?
Kingston FURY Impact DDR5 CAMM2 was documented at Computex 2024 at DDR5-5600, with 32GB and 64GB configurations planned, according to Tom’s Hardware. That announcement does not establish current retail stock. Check Kingston and authorized retailers in your region for a live product listing, and verify that it matches a CAMM2-capable motherboard before ordering.
TEAMGROUP’s November 2024 announcement planned its CAMM2 DDR5 series for Q1 2025, including consumer DDR5-7200 and industrial DDR5-6400 specifications. A planned release date is not evidence of current consumer availability; confirm a present-day listing and platform compatibility rather than relying on the announced roadmap. TEAMGROUP’s announcement gives the published specifications and schedule.
