It was swimming and eating while veterinarians monitored it in a report published September 29, but its long-term outlook and whether it will be released have not been reported.
What happened to the hatchling?
Representatives or volunteers from Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary found the hatchling at a protected terrapin nesting site in Wellfleet, on Cape Cod. The animal was brought to Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable on September 17, 2026. Live Science reported that it weighed 5.2 grams—about 0.18 ounces—on arrival. Live Science reported the discovery and arrival details; CBS Boston also reported its arrival date.
As of Smithsonian’s September 29 report, the terrapin was swimming and eating while under veterinary observation. Those behaviors describe its condition at that time, not a prediction of survival. The reports do not establish a long-term prognosis or say whether the animal will be released. Smithsonian’s September 29 account described its reported activity.
What does bicephaly mean?
The condition is called bicephaly: two heads develop on a single body. Zak Mertz, CEO of New England Wildlife Centers, told Live Science that current understanding is that bicephaly is caused by both genetic and epigenetic factors. That is a general description of proposed factors, not a diagnosis of what caused this terrapin’s condition. The reports do not identify a cause in this individual.

What is known—and unknown—about its condition?
- Known: It is a diamondback terrapin ( Malaclemys terrapin ) hatchling, found in Wellfleet and taken to Cape Wildlife Center for care.
- Reported at the time: It was swimming and eating while veterinarians monitored it.
- Not established: Its sex, the specific cause of its bicephaly, its long-term prognosis, or whether it will be released.
The veterinary team said it would monitor how the hatchling’s two heads and body work together. That observation is not a public prognosis. The reports also do not establish whether the federal status review mentioned by Live Science had concluded.
Why does the discovery matter for terrapins?
WCVB reported that diamondback terrapins are considered threatened in Massachusetts. Live Science said their federal status was under review when its story was published; the available reports do not establish the outcome of that review. WCVB’s report provides the Massachusetts conservation context.

This is a rare individual wildlife case, not evidence of a population trend or of a particular environmental cause. Live Science described the hatchling as the third bicephalic terrapin found in the area in five years, but other accounts use different counts and scopes, such as animals cared for at the center versus sightings across Cape Cod. Those figures should not be combined into a definitive total.
