Supermicro announced two different AI infrastructure offerings: a 10U server for AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, available in air- and liquid-cooled versions, and turnkey NVIDIA-based AI Factory clusters ranging from 4 nodes and 32 GPUs to 32 nodes and 256 GPUs. The server targets organizations seeking MI355X performance without liquid cooling; the clusters package NVIDIA GPUs, software, Spectrum-X Ethernet and cabling as validated rack-scale systems.

What Supermicro announced

The announcement spans both individual GPU servers and pre-integrated clusters, but they are not the same product or accelerator platform. The MI355X system is an AMD-based server. The AI Factory clusters are built around NVIDIA Enterprise Reference Architectures and Blackwell GPUs.

Can AMD Instinct MI355X run in an air-cooled server?

Yes. Supermicro added a 10U OAM server for AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs in both air-cooled and liquid-cooled forms. The air-cooled option is intended for organizations that want this accelerator in a system designed for air cooling, while the liquid-cooled version provides an alternative for deployments planned around liquid cooling. The announcement does not establish facility requirements or comparative cooling costs.

MI355X specifications reported by Supermicro

  • 288GB of HBM3e memory per GPU.
  • Memory bandwidth of 8TB/s.
  • A reported TDP increase from 1,000W to 1,400W. The report gives the figures but does not specify the measurement boundary, so they should not be read as whole-server power consumption.

StorageReview also reported Supermicro’s claim that the 10U MI355X system can deliver up to twice the performance of its air-cooled 8U MI350X system. This is a vendor or announcement figure, not an independently measured benchmark; the report does not provide test workloads or conditions for that comparison.

Supermicro described its Data Center Building Block Solutions (DCBBS) approach as a way to integrate AMD technology rapidly. The announcement establishes the approach as the company’s stated integration strategy, not a measured deployment-time guarantee.

What is a Supermicro AI Factory cluster?

An AI Factory cluster is a rack-scale infrastructure package intended to arrive as a validated, integrated system rather than as separately sourced servers and networking. Supermicro said its clusters are based on NVIDIA Enterprise Reference Architectures and Blackwell GPUs, and include NVIDIA software, Spectrum-X Ethernet networking and full cabling. The company said they are tested up to L12 at its global sites.

That integration can reduce the amount of component coordination a buyer handles when building or refurbishing a data center. It does not, by itself, establish a deployment schedule, customer result, or performance level: the announcement supplied no customer case studies, measured lead times or independent benchmarks.

Cluster sizes and GPU options

The announced range extends from 4 nodes with 32 GPUs to 32 nodes with 256 GPUs. Supermicro was reported as taking orders for 4-, 8- and 32-node configurations. At the stated endpoints, the counts work out to eight GPUs per node; the report does not separately specify the GPU count for every intermediate configuration.

Cluster type GPU and server platform Workloads identified
Universal AI, HPC and visual computing NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition in Supermicro 4U and 5U PCIe GPU systems; the described configuration has 8 GPUs per node. Inference, enterprise HPC, graphics and rendering.
High-performance AI and HPC NVIDIA HGX B200 8-GPU nodes in Supermicro 10U modular platforms with NVIDIA NVLink. Model training, fine-tuning and HPC.

StorageReview described the RTX PRO configuration with the shorthand “2-8-5-200” for CPU-GPU-NIC-bandwidth. The report does not expand the shorthand’s units, so it is best treated as a configuration label rather than a complete specification.

How to choose between the server and a cluster

  • Choose the MI355X server when the requirement is an AMD Instinct system and the intended installation calls for an air-cooled or liquid-cooled 10U server. The announcement does not indicate that MI355X is part of the NVIDIA AI Factory clusters.
  • Consider the RTX PRO 6000 cluster when the target mix emphasizes inference, enterprise HPC, graphics or rendering and the appeal of the package is its integrated NVIDIA software and Spectrum-X networking.
  • Consider the HGX B200 cluster when the target work includes model training, fine-tuning or HPC, for which Supermicro describes an 8-GPU HGX B200 node with NVLink.
  • Compare integration with procurement flexibility: the cluster is presented as a validated, cabled package; the MI355X announcement concerns a server system. The report does not provide pricing or enough detail to compare total deployment costs.

What the announcement does not establish

StorageReview’s November 21, 2025 report provides vendor-reported product specifications and availability statements. It does not include independent benchmark results, customer deployments, pricing, measured power consumption, or confirmation of availability by region. Buyers evaluating a deployment should treat the performance and shipping claims as statements current to that report, rather than as independently verified or universally available outcomes.
