Graph technology models connections as data in their own right. Rather than retrieving related records mainly through table joins, a graph database represents entities as nodes and their connections as relationships or edges, so applications can ask questions about paths and neighborhoods across a dataset.
What graph technology means
A graph has two basic ingredients: things and the connections between them. In a data model, those things might be people, products, places or events; connections might represent that one person knows another, a product depends on a component, or an account transferred money to another account.
In a labeled property graph, a node represents an entity and a relationship connects a source node to a target node. Nodes can have labels and key-value properties; relationships have a type and direction and can also carry properties. Neo4j’s graph concepts guide defines nodes as entities and relationships as connections between source and target nodes.
A graph database stores graph-structured data for querying and updating. Neo4j describes its database as storing nodes, relationships and properties rather than tables or documents, with a model suited to traversing connected datasets. That is a description of a data model and access pattern, not a guarantee that a graph database will outperform another system for every workload.

Property graphs and RDF: two different models
“Graph database” can refer to systems built around different graph models. The two common families are labeled property graphs and RDF graphs. They both express connections, but their data structures, query languages and design priorities differ.
Labeled property graphs
Property graphs use labeled nodes and typed, directed relationships; properties can be attached to either. This model makes it natural to represent application entities and the connections between them. Neo4j uses Cypher, a declarative language for expressing graph patterns; its documentation describes Cypher as similar to SQL but optimized for graphs. See the Neo4j Cypher introduction.

RDF graphs and triple stores
The W3C’s RDF 1.1 Concepts and Abstract Syntax represents each statement as a triple: subject, predicate, object. For example, a person can be the subject, “works for” the predicate and a company the object. The W3C illustrates a triple as a node-arc-node link. RDF uses identifiers such as IRIs and supports literals for values. RDF data is commonly queried with SPARQL, the query language standardized for RDF; the W3C SPARQL 1.1 Query Language specification defines its query forms.
RDF is often a good candidate when shared standards, linked-data exchange or formal descriptions of meaning are central requirements. A property graph may suit an application whose main need is to model and query operational relationships directly. These are design tendencies, not rigid rules: evaluate the specific products and data requirements.

What a knowledge graph is—and is not
A knowledge graph organizes connected facts about entities and concepts so that their relationships and meanings can be used by applications or people. It is an application and information-design idea, not a synonym for one database product or one graph model.
A knowledge graph may use RDF, a property graph, or a combination of graph storage, APIs and reasoning components. Ontologies—formal descriptions of concepts and their relationships—can make the intended meaning more explicit. IBM’s knowledge graph overview notes the role of graph databases and ontologies such as OWL in organizing knowledge.

When a graph database is a good fit
Graphs are worth evaluating when the important questions depend on following relationships, especially across several steps. Examples include finding paths through a transport network, exploring dependencies among software components, recommending items based on connected users and products, or identifying suspicious links among accounts and transactions.
- Multi-hop questions: “Who is connected to this person through two or three introductions?”
- Path discovery: “Which routes connect these locations, and what links lie along them?”
- Neighborhood exploration: “What is directly or indirectly connected to this account, device or component?”
- Changing connections: “How do newly added relationships alter the network around an entity?”
Graphs are not automatically the best choice for simple tabular aggregates, stable reporting schemas or workloads already handled effectively by relational tables and indexes. Performance depends on the data, query patterns, database implementation and operational setup. Compare representative queries against suitable alternatives rather than assuming that a graph is inherently faster.

How to choose a graph approach
Before selecting a product or learning path, compare the requirements that shape the system. Neo4j documents Cypher, ACID transactions and clustering in its getting-started documentation; RDF’s model is specified by the W3C. Product capabilities and deployment options vary, so check the documentation for the editions and versions under consideration.
| Decision factor | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Data model | Do labeled property graphs fit the application’s entities and relationships, or does an RDF triple model better support its data and exchange needs? |
| Semantics and interoperability | Are shared identifiers, linked-data standards, formal vocabularies or ontology-based meaning necessary? |
| Query patterns | Are the central operations traversals, path queries and neighborhood exploration, or mostly filtering, reporting and aggregation? |
| Query language and skills | Which language or API will the team use—Cypher, SPARQL or another option—and what will it take to develop and maintain those skills? |
| Schema evolution and validation | How will the model accommodate new entity types and relationships, and what rules will prevent invalid or inconsistent data? |
| Operations | Do the specific products meet requirements for transactions, clustering and other deployment needs? |
| Tooling and governance | Are the available tools, ecosystem maturity and data-governance practices sufficient for the project? |
A practical beginner path
- Sketch a small domain. Choose a familiar subject such as books and readers, then draw the entities and connections the application needs to answer questions about.
- Learn the property-graph basics. Identify nodes, relationships, labels, properties and direction. Consider whether multiple connections of the same type are possible and what the model permits.
- Build and query a tiny property graph. Use the Neo4j beginner documentation to get oriented, then learn Cypher through its Cypher introduction.
- Learn RDF fundamentals. Study triples, IRIs, literals and namespaces, then try expressing a few of the same facts in RDF and querying them with SPARQL. The W3C’s RDF Concepts specification and SPARQL specification provide the standards-based definitions.
- Model the same domain both ways. Compare how each approach represents the facts and handles the questions that matter. Decide whether traversal, formal semantics, interoperability or operational simplicity is the priority.
For a structured follow-up beyond product documentation, the technical book Graph Databases is another learning resource; confirm the edition suits your needs before buying.
