A plug-in PCIe analyzer uses an in-line interposer to observe traffic moving between two endpoints, then sends captured data to host software for graphical decoding and investigation. The display lets an engineer move from a captured session to packets, fields, errors and endpoint-to-endpoint transactions; a separate bit-stream view can help when decoded packets do not explain the problem.

What the analyzer probes

The analyzer’s interposer sits in the PCI Express link between the devices under test. Teledyne LeCroy describes its PCIe protocol analyzers as using non-intrusive, transparent probing: traffic passes through the hardware while the analyzer observes it. The analyzer captures the link activity and transfers traces to host software for review.

“Transparent” describes the intended pass-through observation method; it does not mean every analyzer fits every link. Hardware form factor and supported PCIe generation and lane width must match the topology being tested. An interposer designed for one connector or link arrangement may not suit another.

How a graphical probe session works

  1. Fit the interposer into the link. Choose a probe or adapter compatible with the connection under test, then place it between the endpoints so traffic can pass through while being observed.
  2. Capture and decode link activity. PCIe Protocol Analysis software can decode Transaction Layer Packets (TLPs), Data Link Layer Packets (DLLPs), training sequences and lower-level link traffic. Teledyne LeCroy documentation also describes detection of invalid symbols, running-disparity errors, CRC errors, idle-data errors and bad end-of-packet markers.
  3. Navigate the trace in the graphical interface. CATC Trace, the Windows-based display described in the Summit Analyzer User Manual, provides filtering, real-time trigger controls, violation alerts and drill-down into captured traffic. Engineers can collapse fields that are not relevant to the question at hand.
  4. Follow a transaction across endpoints. The software can correlate a request from one endpoint with the completion returned by the other. This helps investigate whether an observed issue lies in a request, its response or their interaction.
  5. Switch to bit-level inspection if needed. BitTracer presents the bit stream before high-level packet decoding. That lower-level view is useful when investigating corruption that may be related to signal integrity and is not adequately explained by the decoded packet view.
  6. Use diagnostics or validation workflows where required. LinkExpert adds automated control of analyzer and exerciser functions, serial-link diagnostics, and interfaces for compliance, conformance and validation testing.

Which graphical view answers which question?

The views are complementary rather than interchangeable: packet decoding explains protocol behavior, while a pre-decode bit view exposes lower-level link activity.

CATC Trace Understanding captured protocol traffic Graphical trace navigation, filtering, triggers, violation alerts and drill-down through decoded traffic.
BitTracer Investigating activity beneath decoded packets A view of the bit stream before high-level packet decoding, described as logic-analyzer-like.
LinkExpert Diagnostics and validation workflows Automated analyzer/exerciser control, serial-link diagnostics, and compliance-, conformance- and validation-testing interfaces.

These capabilities are described in Teledyne LeCroy’s Summit Analyzer documentation. They should not be assumed to be available in every PCIe analyzer product or software package.

What to check before choosing a plug-in analyzer

  • Generation and lane width: Match the supported PCIe generation and link width—such as x1, x4 or x16—to the link you need to observe.
  • Probe form factor: Check compatibility with the actual topology, which may use a slot, cable, M.2, CEM, OCP or EDSFF connection.
  • Decode and trigger depth: Confirm that packet coverage, filtering, trigger controls, error detection and request/completion correlation meet the debugging task.
  • Physical-layer visibility: Decide whether a pre-decode bit-stream display is necessary in addition to protocol-level analysis.
  • Automation needs: If the work involves exercising links, diagnostics or validation, check for the required control and test interfaces.
  • Trace sharing: Verify whether saved captures can be opened and analyzed on a separate host. Teledyne LeCroy says its software can review saved traces without an attached analyzer, enabling lab-to-desktop collaboration.
