Only five users saw the Twitch stream while it was live, according to figures Twitch reported in 2019. That does not mean only five people saw the video: its automatically generated recording drew approximately 2,200 views before Twitch removed it. The headline is about the live audience, not the video’s later reach.
What the Twitch figures count

These are different measures from different stages of distribution. The recording’s view count is not a count of people who watched live, and the reported figures do not establish how many people later encountered copies or excerpts elsewhere.
Why the live audience was small, but the recording reached more people
The broadcast was not described in the available reporting as a widely recommended Twitch stream. Reporting indicates that the attacker circulated a link in an effort to attract viewers. The recording then accumulated views while it remained available on Twitch after the attack. That gap between a small real-time audience and later viewing is the key to understanding the figures.

After Twitch removed its recording, the video was copied and re-uploaded, and it was discussed on other platforms. The New Zealand Classification Office classified the 35-minute video as objectionable. Those facts show that the material circulated beyond the original stream, but they do not supply a reliable count of its total audience across platforms.

What the five-viewer figure does—and does not—tell us
- It describes the live broadcast, not all later exposure. The recording, copies, re-uploads, and excerpts are separate from the audience Twitch reported for the live stream.
- It is not a definitive total audience figure. The available reporting does not establish a complete cross-platform count.
- It does not show how much of the video each viewer watched. The reported live-viewer figure alone cannot establish whether anyone watched the full broadcast.
So “almost no one saw it” is accurate only when it refers to the broadcast as it happened. It is misleading if read as a claim that almost no one ever saw the video.
The attack behind the stream
On 9 October 2019, Yom Kippur, Stephan Balliet began streaming from near a synagogue in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, at about 11:54 a.m. He failed to enter the synagogue, then killed two people nearby. His far-right and antisemitic motive was established in the prosecution and trial record. In December 2020, the Higher Regional Court of Naumburg sentenced him to life imprisonment with subsequent preventive detention.
