Microchip says its split software-and-hardware architecture can avoid the single-interface bottleneck of conventional in-line designs, and reports large performance gains in its own tests. Those figures are vendor measurements—not independent benchmarks—and depend on the server and test configuration.
What the SmartRAID 4300 is—and what it is not
Announced by Microchip on August 5, 2025, the Adaptec SmartRAID 4300 is a storage controller family aimed at server OEMs, storage systems, data centers and enterprise customers. Microchip positions it for AI data centers that need fast NVMe access for demanding storage workloads.
Despite the AI framing, this is a storage RAID accelerator, not a GPU or a general-purpose AI compute accelerator. Its role is to help manage NVMe storage and accelerate RAID and parity work in a server. The family is designed for systems using PCIe Gen 4 or Gen 5 host CPUs.
How its architecture is intended to improve storage I/O
SmartRAID 4300 separates the software and hardware roles: Microchip’s Smart Storage software runs on the host CPU, while the controller hardware performs RAID and parity acceleration. According to Microchip, writes can travel directly from the host CPU to NVMe endpoints at the PCIe generation’s speed, rather than passing through a single interface that carries all data flows in a conventional in-line design.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The intended benefit is a less constrained path between host and SSDs, alongside hardware assistance for RAID-related processing. Microchip also lists processor-core idling and autonomous power reduction as efficiency features. The announcement does not establish that every workload will see a speedup: storage performance still depends on the complete server configuration and the workload.
Drive capacity and reported performance
Microchip describes 8-, 16-, 24- and 32-drive configurations. The family supports up to 32 CPU-attached x4 NVMe devices and up to 64 logical drives or RAID arrays. The counts are family-level maximums; the announcement does not specify how every configuration maps to individual controller models.

| Microchip-reported figure | Workload or configuration | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 7× I/O-performance increase | Compared with prior-generation offerings; Microchip internal testing, 2025 | Vendor-reported comparison, not an independently verified result. The announcement does not provide a universal gain for every workload. |
| Up to 27.2 million 4KB random-read IOPS | 32 NVMe SSDs; Microchip blog, 2025 | Vendor result for the stated drive count and random-read workload. |
| Up to 263,000 MBps 256KB sequential reads | 32 NVMe SSDs; Microchip blog, 2025 | Vendor result for the stated drive count and sequential-read workload. |
Microchip’s performance brief cautions that results vary with the CPU, memory, operating system, BIOS, NVMe drive model and benchmark software. The reported maxima should therefore be treated as configuration-specific vendor measurements, not a performance guarantee or a direct forecast for a planned server.
How it differs from an in-line RAID data path
| Design point | Conventional in-line approach, as described by Microchip | SmartRAID 4300 approach |
|---|---|---|
| Software and hardware roles | Microchip says traditional architectures rely on a PCIe host interface slot for all data flows. | Smart Storage software runs on the host CPU; controller hardware accelerates RAID and parity. |
| Write path | All data flows through the single host-interface path, which Microchip identifies as a potential bottleneck. | Writes can flow directly from the host CPU to NVMe endpoints at their PCIe generation speed. |
| Drive scale and host generation | Not stated for conventional designs in Microchip’s comparison. | Up to 32 CPU-attached x4 NVMe devices; supports PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 host CPUs. |
This is Microchip’s architectural comparison, not a comprehensive benchmark against every in-line controller or software RAID implementation. The announcement does not provide comparative results for RAID levels, rebuild behavior, management tools or competing products.

Security, power and operating conditions
- Security: Microchip lists a hardware root of trust, secure boot and update, attestation, Self-Encrypting Drive support and end-to-end integrity safeguards.
- Typical power: approximately 20.75 W, as stated by Microchip in 2025. Treat this as a typical vendor specification, not a maximum for every workload or configuration.
- Operating temperature: 0°C to 55°C, according to Microchip’s 2025 product information.
- Recommended airflow: 300 LFM, according to Microchip’s 2025 product information.
- Reliability figure: 3 million-hour MTBF at 40°C, as specified by Microchip in 2025. MTBF is a statistical reliability measure, not a promise that an individual unit will operate for that length of time.
Production availability and what to confirm before specifying it
Microchip said the SmartRAID 4300 accelerators were available for production integration and directed prospective buyers to its sales representatives or authorized worldwide distributors. That establishes the vendor’s stated production status, not stock at a particular distributor or compatibility with a particular server.
For a system design or purchase, confirm the exact accelerator configuration, supported NVMe drives, server and firmware compatibility, and the intended RAID setup with Microchip or the system vendor. The public figures cited here do not identify specific drive models, benchmark software or a complete test-server configuration, so a workload-specific qualification is important before using the headline numbers for capacity planning.
