AI can detect and analyze cough sounds, but current evidence supports cough counting, monitoring and research more strongly than a stand-alone diagnosis of what is causing a cough. Hyfe Cough Tracker has reported strong results in a controlled sound study; Google HeAR is a research model, and Swaasa is a cough-analysis platform with preliminary clinical-validation evidence. None of those facts, by themselves, establishes that an app can reliably diagnose your cough or that it is authorized to do so.
Can an app identify the cause of a cough?
Sometimes cough audio contains signals that may help distinguish respiratory conditions. But hearing a cough and identifying its cause are different tasks. An app may detect and count cough-like sounds without showing that the person has a particular infection or lung disease.
Diagnosis depends on more than sound. The performance of an audio model can vary with its training data, microphone, background noise, acoustic conditions, the population tested and how common a condition is in that population. A result from a controlled recording study therefore does not establish how well the same system will work for people using it at home.

Which AI cough apps and platforms are available?
| Tool | What it does | Evidence described here | What that evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyfe Cough Tracker | Smartphone app for passive cough monitoring | A controlled study of solicited respiratory sounds reported 91% sensitivity, 98% specificity and a Pearson correlation of 0.968 with human cough counts. | Those results do not establish diagnostic accuracy in everyday community use or identify the cause of an individual cough. |
| Google HeAR | Health Acoustic Representations, a bioacoustic foundation model for researchers building custom models | Google Research says it was trained on 300 million pieces of de-identified audio, including roughly 100 million cough sounds. | HeAR is not described as a consumer diagnostic app, and its training scale alone does not prove that a particular condition can be diagnosed accurately. |
| Salcit Technologies’ Swaasa | AI product that analyzes cough sounds and assesses lung health | A 2025 medRxiv preprint reports clinical validation using smartphone cough recordings and physician diagnoses as the reference standard. | A preprint is preliminary evidence; it is not proof of regulatory clearance or a definitive diagnosis for an individual user. |
What Hyfe’s accuracy figures mean
Results from a controlled sound study
Hyfe’s reported 91% sensitivity, 98% specificity and 0.968 Pearson correlation came from a controlled study of solicited respiratory sounds. Sensitivity and specificity describe performance in that study’s setting; the correlation compares app cough counts with human counts. These figures are not interchangeable, and none is a percentage chance that the app will correctly identify the cause of your cough.
Why real-world performance can differ
The study authors called for more validation in clinical and community settings. The published method also notes that environmental noise can reduce performance. A controlled result should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to a noisy home, a crowded place or a different phone and microphone.

- The 3M Littmann CORE Stethoscope connects with Eko software on a smart device to visualize, record and share data. (Smart device not included. Some features require a subscription)
- Connects to Eko software to visualize and share heart sound waveforms
- Up to 40x amplification (at peak frequency, vs. analog mode)
- Active noise cancellation reduces unwanted background sounds
- Toggle between analog and amplified listening modes; Designed for use with adult and pediatric patients
What happens to the sound recording?
Hyfe’s published method says the app continuously monitors ambient sound, records a 0.5-second snippet around an explosive sound it detects, sends that snippet to a cloud server and applies a convolutional neural network to produce a cough score. That description is specific to the published Hyfe method; it should not be treated as a privacy description for HeAR, Swaasa or every cough app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore enabling microphone access, check the app’s current privacy notice and settings for what is captured, whether audio or derived data is sent off-device, how long it is retained, who can access it and how to delete it. The information available here does not establish those details for HeAR or Swaasa.

Are cough-analysis apps FDA-cleared?
FDA oversight depends on a software function’s intended use and risk. Some mobile software functions may be medical devices, while lower-risk wellness functions may fall under enforcement discretion. Check the FDA’s current AI-enabled medical-device list and the product’s own regulatory statements rather than assuming that an AI health feature is cleared.
The available information does not establish FDA authorization for Hyfe, Google HeAR or Swaasa to diagnose the cause of a cough. BARDA’s target-product profile identifies cough-audio diagnostics for screening infections such as COVID-19, influenza, RSV and tuberculosis as a medical-countermeasure goal; a target profile is not authorization of a consumer product.

How to use a cough-listening app responsibly
- Match the tool to the task. Treat cough counts and trends as monitoring information, not as proof of a disease.
- Read the evidence in context. Look for the population studied, recording conditions, reference standard and whether validation was controlled or conducted in real-world use.
- Check privacy before granting microphone access. Understand whether recordings leave your phone and how the provider handles them.
- Verify regulatory claims. Confirm the exact product and intended use in current FDA information; a research model or preprint is not a clearance.
- Get clinical assessment when needed. Do not use an app result to delay care for a persistent, severe or concerning cough.
