To get better data-center flash storage from EDSFF E1.S SSDs, size power delivery and cooling for the drive you plan to run, match the E1.S thickness to the chassis and workload, and validate the entire NVMe, PCIe, backplane, and hot-swap path. E1.S can support higher power than typical M.2 drives, but that advantage only matters if the server can deliver and cool it.
1. Budget power for the PCIe link you intend to use
Choose the SSD and platform power envelope together. A 2023 white paper from KIOXIA, Meta, and Microsoft says typical M.2 SSDs are limited to around 8.25 W, while an E1.S design can support up to 25 W. The paper also says 25 W is required to saturate a PCIe 4.0 x4 link. These are design and interface figures, not a promise that every E1.S drive draws 25 W or that every server can supply it.
Before standardizing on a drive, confirm its maximum power draw and the power budget available at the slot, backplane, and server level. Size for the PCIe generation and lane width you intend to operate, rather than assuming a higher-power SSD will deliver its peak performance in a constrained system. A power limit can become a performance limit if it prevents the drive from sustaining its intended operating point.
2. Engineer airflow and thermal behavior for sustained work
E1.S supports internal heatsink options and thermal-throttling behavior. KIOXIA data-center, enterprise, and client SSD product-strategy leader Maulik Sompura described the form factor as supporting heatsinks and throttling to manage airflow and heat in high-temperature server environments. Those features help manage heat; they do not remove the need to validate the drive in the actual chassis.

Check the whole thermal path under the expected workload: server inlet temperature, fan curve, drive spacing, heatsink choice, and airflow through the 1U or 2U enclosure. A short peak benchmark does not establish sustained performance in a densely populated server. Confirm that the drive remains within its thermal limits and that any throttling behavior is acceptable for the service you are building.
3. Choose an E1.S thickness for capacity, power, and cooling trade-offs
E1.S comes in thickness options that can affect what fits in a slot and how a system balances capacity and power. KIOXIA describes a 33.75 mm-wide E1.S enclosure as providing additional room for NAND placement. Its E1 table lists 9.5 mm, 15 mm, and 25 mm variants with different power limits, but the cited information does not give a numeric limit for each thickness.

| E1.S thickness | KIOXIA’s described fit | Power limit in cited E1 table |
|---|---|---|
| 9.5 mm | Small-footprint and edge systems | Different from other variants; numeric limit not stated in KIOXIA’s cited E1 table |
| 15 mm | Scalable performance and capacity; AI/ML/HPC systems | Different from other variants; numeric limit not stated in KIOXIA’s cited E1 table |
| 25 mm | Storage-rich systems | Different from other variants; numeric limit not stated in KIOXIA’s cited E1 table |
Compare usable capacity per slot, watts per slot, cooling headroom, and the number of drives the chassis can accommodate. A thicker option may suit a capacity-dense design, but the decision depends on supported carriers, power, and thermal conditions—not thickness alone.
4. Make hot-swap a validated service workflow
E1.S systems can support hot plugging, allowing a failed drive to be replaced without powering down the server. The form factor alone does not guarantee that an installed drive can be safely removed live. Confirm that the chassis, carrier, backplane, firmware, and operating system support the intended hot-swap procedure.

Test the operational sequence your team will use, including drive identification, removal, replacement, and recovery. This checks both the physical service path and the platform’s ability to recognize and manage the replacement drive.
5. Verify every link in the NVMe and PCIe chain
SNIA describes EDSFF as using NVMe, PCIe, the SFF-TA-1002 edge connector, and SFF-TA-1009 pinout and functions. A drive’s E1.S label is therefore only one part of compatibility. Check the drive and platform’s PCIe generation and lane width, connector and cage, backplane, firmware, thermal profile, and any OCP Datacenter NVMe compliance requirements that apply to your deployment.

Validate link training and operation in the target server before rolling out a standard configuration. A mismatch in lane width, PCIe generation, backplane support, or firmware can prevent the system from delivering the intended link or service behavior even when the drive fits physically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare E1.S SSDs for a 1U or 2U server
Start with the chassis and workload, then compare candidate drives on the measures that determine usable performance and operational fit. Published peak figures should not substitute for platform validation: vendors describe supported configurations, not guaranteed results in every server.
- Interface: PCIe generation and lane width supported by both drive and server.
- Performance: Sustained sequential throughput and random IOPS for the workload, not only headline maximums.
- Power and thermals: Maximum power, heatsink configuration, throttling behavior, and compatibility with the server’s cooling profile.
- Capacity and endurance: Usable capacity per slot and endurance rating in DWPD or TBW, matched to the workload and service life.
- Data protection and security: Power-loss protection and security features required by the deployment.
- Operations and cost: Hot-swap and backplane compatibility, plus total cost per usable terabyte.
Example: ATP N651Si
ATP Electronics lists the N651Si as a PCIe Gen4 x4 E1.S NVMe drive in a 9.5 mm enclosure, with capacities from 960 GB to 7.68 TB. Its vendor-published specifications include up to 6,400 MB/s sequential read, up to 6,100 MB/s sequential write, up to 1,000,000 random-read IOPS, and up to 1,200,000 random-write IOPS. ATP lists 1 DWPD for a five-year enterprise workload, up to 79,000 TBW under its stated conditions, hardware/firmware power-loss protection, an operating range of -40°C to 85°C, and a five-year warranty. ATP notes that specifications may vary by density and configuration; validate the specific model and its behavior in the intended server.
What market forecasts can—and cannot—tell you
Electronic Design, citing TrendFocus, reported a projection that E1.S would rise from 1.8% of combined PCIe-form-factor exabyte share in 2021 to 35.4% in 2026. That is a historical forecast, not a measurement of current market share, and it does not establish that E1.S is the right choice for a particular server. Use platform fit, workload requirements, and validated drive behavior to make that decision.
