You can use AI-generated music in a YouTube video only if the track’s rights allow your intended use; AI generation alone does not prevent a Content ID claim. YouTube also asks creators to disclose AI-generated music in the upload flow. That disclosure is separate from copyright permission and does not, by itself, reduce monetization eligibility or audience reach.
Can you monetize a YouTube video with AI-generated music?
Potentially. Monetization depends on whether you have permission for the specific use and meet YouTube’s other monetization requirements—not simply on whether a person or an AI created the track. YouTube’s general guidance identifies public-domain material and permission from the copyright owner as routes to using music safely. For music from a generator or library, check the license that applies to your particular track, account, and plan.
AI-generated music can still be matched by Content ID. A match may lead to a claim that monetizes, tracks, or blocks a video, and the applicable policy can vary by territory. A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright takedown or strike. YouTube notes that Content ID cannot tell whether you bought rights elsewhere, so a claim can appear even when you believe your use is licensed.

Read the provider’s current terms and the license for the exact output or plan. YouTube recommends checking how a third-party music license permits use; it does not certify individual AI music providers or their terms.

- Monetization: Does the license expressly permit use in monetized YouTube videos?
- Scope: What commercial uses, territories, and license term are covered?
- Attribution: Must you credit the provider or artist, and in what form?
- Restrictions: Are redistribution, sublicensing, or other uses limited?
- Content ID: Does the provider explain whether the track may be fingerprinted or enrolled in Content ID, and what to do if a mistaken claim occurs?
- Proof: Can you retain a license, receipt, account record, or other evidence tied to this track?
Do not treat “AI-generated,” “royalty-free,” or “free” as proof that a track is cleared for your video. A description calling a track free does not tell Content ID that you have permission. If the license is unclear about monetized videos, territories, ownership, or Content ID, ask the provider before publishing or choose music with clearer rights. YouTube also points creators to its Audio Library, Creator Music in certain regions, original music, and third-party music licensed for the intended use.
Keep records that can support your rights
Save the audio file, provider and plan, generation date, track identifier, the license terms in effect when you obtained it, and any receipt or provider statement about monetized YouTube use. YouTube does not publish this as a required checklist; it is practical documentation that may help you explain your basis if a claim appears.

Disclose AI-generated music during upload
YouTube lists AI-generated music as an example of content creators need to disclose through the upload flow. When asked about altered or synthetic content, answer Yes for a video that includes AI-generated music. The disclosure informs viewers about AI use; it is not a license, a Content ID exemption, or proof that the music is cleared. YouTube says making the disclosure does not limit reach or eligibility to earn money.
What to do if YouTube claims the music
- Review the claim: In YouTube Studio, open the video’s copyright or restriction details. Check the claimant, the matched segment, and the policy, including whether it applies in particular territories.
- Compare it with your permission: Locate the license and records for the exact track. A claim alone does not establish that your license is invalid, but having a copy of the track or crediting its creator is not, by itself, proof of permission.
- If the claim is valid or you lack sufficient rights, you can leave it in place or use YouTube Studio’s available editing options to trim the segment, erase or mute the claimed audio, or replace the song with Audio Library music.
- If you have a defensible basis, submit a dispute that explains the specific rights you hold or the specific error you believe occurred, and keep supporting documentation. YouTube says that credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize are not valid reasons by themselves. Do not dispute just because the track is AI-generated or labeled free.
The claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. If you dispute within five days of the claim, YouTube says revenue is held beginning on the claim date; if you dispute later, the hold begins on the dispute date. YouTube does not adjudicate copyright disputes. If you cannot document your rights or the consequences are substantial, avoid making claims you cannot support and consider qualified legal advice.

Content ID registration is not the same as permission to use a track
A license to include music in your video does not automatically give you the exclusive rights needed to submit it as a Content ID reference. YouTube’s Content ID eligibility rules require exclusive rights in the territories covered by the claim. Before attempting to register a track, verify that you hold those rights; a non-exclusive license to use music is not enough to establish eligibility.

A practical pre-upload checklist
- Confirm in writing that the exact track and license permit your planned YouTube use, including monetization and relevant territories.
- Check any attribution, term, redistribution, and Content ID restrictions.
- Save the track, license version, provider and plan details, and purchase or account records.
- Answer Yes to YouTube’s AI disclosure question for AI-generated music.
- If a claim appears, inspect its details and respond according to the rights you can actually document.
