A Caltech-led project is investigating how primordial germ cells—the early cells that eventually give rise to eggs and sperm—form in human development. The work could improve understanding of some causes of infertility, but it is foundational research, not a treatment or clinical service available to patients.
What are primordial germ cells?
Primordial germ cells are early developmental cells that become the precursors of eggs and sperm. They emerge at an early stage of development, long before mature reproductive cells exist. Understanding how they form means studying not only the cells themselves but also the surrounding tissues and the signals that may guide their development.
What is the Caltech project studying?
Caltech reports that a $2.4 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine supports work by Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz’s team and collaborators, including Amander Clark of UCLA. Using two complementary stem-cell-derived models of early human development, the researchers aim to map where and when primordial germ cells arise, examine nearby tissues, and identify molecular signals involved in their development. The goal is a more detailed account of early germ-cell formation that may help researchers understand infertility mechanisms and recreate aspects of development more accurately in the laboratory. Caltech’s September 24, 2026 announcement also summarizes an earlier 2023 result from Zernicka-Goetz’s team: an integrated stem-cell-derived embryo model shown to generate primordial germ cells.
The project is focused on basic developmental biology. The announcement does not report a clinical trial, patient outcomes, a diagnostic test, or a therapy, and it does not establish that laboratory-derived eggs or sperm are available for reproductive use.

How could this research help explain infertility?
When infertility has no obvious explanation, researchers may investigate processes that occur far earlier than the point at which a person seeks care. If scientists can better identify when primordial germ cells emerge and which surrounding signals are associated with their development, that knowledge could help clarify how some early developmental problems arise. It may also provide better laboratory models for studying those processes.
That is a possible research benefit, not a demonstrated explanation for any individual patient’s infertility. The Caltech announcement does not claim that the project can diagnose a cause, predict who will experience infertility, or improve treatment outcomes.

Is this an infertility treatment patients can get now?
No. This project studies how the precursors of eggs and sperm form in stem-cell-derived models. It is not a treatment offered to patients, and the announcement reports no clinical use or timeline for one. People seeking care should distinguish this early-stage research from established clinical services.
How does it differ from established infertility care?
The project asks how germ cells develop; clinical infertility care evaluates a person’s circumstances and may offer management or treatment based on test findings and patient preferences. The World Health Organization defines infertility as failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. It estimates that infertility affects one in six people of reproductive age at some point in life. WHO’s 2025 guideline announcement describes care that can progress from simpler management strategies to options such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF), depending on the clinical situation. These are clinical-care pathways, not outcomes of the Caltech project. The full WHO guideline for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility is intended to inform countries adapting or updating their national guidance.

What oversight applies to research involving lab-derived gametes?
Oversight depends in part on what researchers do with cells derived in the laboratory. The ISSCR guidelines distinguish in-vitro gametogenesis research that does not attempt fertilization and embryo generation from research in which derived gametes are used to create embryos. The latter calls for specialized scientific and ethical review under the guidelines. Applicable laws and policies also vary by jurisdiction; research guidance is not clinical authorization.
