Broot is an interactive terminal file browser that combines a selectively expanded directory tree with filename and content search, previews, Git information, file operations, and configurable commands. Unlike tree or ls, it is designed for exploring and acting on files in one interface. Its br shell function adds shell-aware navigation, letting you return to a directory selected in broot.
What broot does—and how it differs from tree or ls
A typical tree command prints a directory hierarchy, while ls lists entries in a directory. Broot is interactive: it displays a navigable tree and lets you filter or search, inspect entries, and run actions without leaving the interface.
To keep large directories readable, broot expands relevant branches while collapsing other entries into an unlisted line. You can filter by filename, use regular-expression searches, or search file contents. The result is a working view rather than a complete static dump.
The interface also includes configurable verbs—actions broot can run on selected files—along with file-management operations. The official project describes broot as a way to navigate directories, find files, and launch commands: Canop/broot on GitHub.

What you can do inside broot
Find and inspect files
- Filter filenames and search with regular expressions.
- Search within file contents.
- Preview files, with details depending on broot’s release and the capabilities of your terminal.
- Open a file in an editor or its system application.
Navigate and manage directories
- Move through a selectively expanded directory tree.
- Use built-in operations to move, copy, remove, and create directories.
- Use multiple panels to copy or move items between locations.
- Stage several files and run a command against the selection.
Review project and filesystem details
- Show Git status and branch information.
- Sort by size or date, and inspect filesystem usage.
- Toggle hidden and Git-ignored files, and display details such as sizes, dates, and permissions.
These capabilities make broot more than a tree viewer, but it is still a terminal application: preview formats, image display, clipboard behavior, and some keyboard interactions can depend on the version and terminal emulator.
Install broot and enable the br shell function
Install a platform binary or build broot from its Rust project, then launch it in a terminal. Follow the current platform-specific steps in the official project documentation; package names and supported installation methods can change.
- Install broot using the instructions for your operating system.
- Run
brootin a terminal. On first launch, follow its prompt to install thebrshell function. - Restart or reload your shell if the setup instructions require it, then run
br. - Navigate to a directory in broot and use its navigation action to return there in the parent shell.
The shell function matters because a standalone child process cannot change the working directory of the shell that launched it. The function provides shell-aware integration, so navigation can update the parent shell’s location. If br is not recognized after setup, check that the shell configuration was updated and reloaded, then consult the installation instructions for your shell.
Customize shortcuts, colors, and actions
Broot’s configuration lets you adapt the interface to your habits. You can define custom verbs, bind actions to control sequences or function keys, and customize colors or skins. Display flags control which file details appear, while sorting and visibility options help tailor the tree to a task.

Start with the built-in behavior, then add custom commands for repeated work—for example, a verb that opens a selected file with a preferred tool. Check the configuration documentation bundled with the version you installed before relying on a particular setting: names and supported behavior can evolve.
Current release and compatibility notes
The official changelog lists broot 1.60.1, dated September 8, 2026. Version 1.60.0, dated September 5, 2026, added preview wrapping and Git diff previews and replaced libgit2 with gix. Recent changelog entries also describe clipboard support in the macOS binary, terminal keyboard fixes, image-preview protocol handling, and improvements to Git status. These features do not guarantee identical behavior on every system. Check the changelog and installation documentation for your platform, and consider your terminal emulator when evaluating graphics, clipboard, preview, or keyboard support.
