moe is a Vim-inspired terminal text editor written in Nim, with modal keybindings, syntax highlighting, autocomplete, TOML configuration, and an integrated terminal. It is a separate project from GNU moe. Its README recommends Nim 2.0.10 or newer; installation instructions differ between the older ncurses-based release line and the newer Celina-based development line.
What is moe?
fox0430/moe is a command-line editor that describes itself as a Vim-inspired editor written in Nim. It offers familiar modal editing rather than a purely modeless interface: documented modes include normal, insert, visual, replace, command, and filer modes, alongside Vim-like keybindings and registers.
The project’s name is explained as the recursive acronym “moe is an optimal editor,” with an additional reference to the Japanese slang term 萌え. The project is licensed under GNU General Public License version 3, and its repository welcomes contributions, bug reports, and feature requests.
How to install moe
Check prerequisites
The project README recommends Nim 2.0.10 or newer. On GNU/Linux, xclip, xsel, and wl-clipboard are optional clipboard tools. They are not presented as core installation requirements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the installation command for the project line
The command depends on which implementation line you want. The README gives nimble install moe for the ncurses-based line through version 0.4.0. For version 0.5.0 and later, it points to the Celina-based development state and gives nimble install moe@#head.
| Project line | Installation command | Context |
|---|---|---|
| ncurses-based, through 0.4.0 | nimble install moe |
README installation instruction for the older line |
| Celina-based, 0.5.0 and later | nimble install moe@#head |
README instruction for the newer development state |
Because the newer command targets the development head and Nim requirements or commands can change, check the current instructions in the fox0430/moe repository before installing.

What can moe do?
Editing and buffer handling
The README lists undo and redo, incremental search, automatic parenthesis closing and deletion, trailing-space handling, indentation lines, tab lines, current-word highlighting, autosave, bookmarks, macros, and Vim-like registers. It also lists multiple selectable buffer backends: GapBuffer, square-root decomposition, Rope (B-tree), and Piece Table (RB-tree). The official site highlights GapBuffer as its buffer-management implementation; the broader set of selectable backends is described in the repository’s feature list.
Encoding support includes UTF-8 and other encodings, but the project notes that encoding support is incomplete. Unicode support is also highlighted by the official site.

Languages and language tooling
The documented syntax-highlighting languages and formats include C, C++, C#, Go, Haskell, Java, JavaScript, Markdown, Nim, Python, Rust, shell languages, TOML, YAML, JSON and JSONC, Lisp, Lua, Tcl, Hyprland, Dockerfile, and XML. The project also lists autocomplete, including simple suggestions from open buffers, and syntax checking for Nim.
Language Server Protocol support is marked work in progress, not a completed feature. The project lists a broad intended set of LSP capabilities—including completion, diagnostics, hover, signature help, navigation, formatting, rename, symbols, and folding—but that roadmap should not be read as a promise that these functions are currently available.

moe borrows Vim’s modal interaction style and keybindings, but that does not make it a drop-in Vim replacement. The projects are distinct editors, and the available documentation describes moe’s own feature set and development status rather than guaranteeing compatibility with Vim configuration, plugins, or workflows.

| Area | What moe documents | What that means for a Vim user |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Vim-like modes, keybindings, and registers | Modal editing should feel familiar, but compatibility with Vim configuration is not established. |
| Editing engine | Several listed buffer backends, including GapBuffer, Rope, and Piece Table | Offers implementation choices; the materials do not provide comparative benchmark results. |
| Language tools | Syntax highlighting, autocomplete, Nim syntax checking; LSP marked work in progress | Do not assume parity with mature Vim language-server workflows. |
| Configuration and workflow | TOML settings, configuration UI, terminal, build-on-save, QuickRun, Git support, backups, and macros | Includes useful built-in tools, but the project lists plugins as planned rather than available. |
No authoritative benchmark, adoption study, or productivity statistic is established in the project materials cited here, so performance or popularity comparisons would be speculative.
What is still under development?
The project’s roadmap is important when deciding whether moe fits a daily workflow. In addition to LSP support being work in progress, the README lists these as planned rather than completed:
- Snippets
- Spell checking
- Editing files over SSH
- Fuzzy search
- A plugin system
- Support for huge files
Those plans indicate active development areas; they do not establish when, or whether, each feature will ship.
moe is not GNU moe
The name “moe” also refers to GNU moe, a separate modeless console editor maintained by Antonio Diaz Diaz. GNU moe has a different interaction model and feature set, and it is not the Nim-written fox0430/moe discussed here. The distinction matters when following installation instructions or looking up documentation: Homebrew’s brew install moe installs the GNU project, not fox0430/moe.
