For Android, Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane all document biometric vault unlocking and autofill support. There is no evidence here for a universal reliability winner: the best fit depends on your phone’s biometric hardware, the apps and browsers you use, and how often you are willing to enter your account password.
Biometric unlocking and autofill are separate features. A fingerprint or face scan can unlock a manager’s vault; Android autofill integration lets that manager offer saved credentials in apps and browsers. Check that your chosen manager supports both, then confirm its settings on your device.
How to choose an Android password manager with biometric autofill
Compare the two parts of the login experience separately: whether the manager can unlock with your device’s biometrics, and whether Android has selected it to fill credentials. The vendors document both capabilities, but they do not establish how reliably autofill works across every device, app, browser, or login form.
- Biometric method and hardware: The available options depend on your device and Android settings. Bitwarden specifies Class 3 biometric strength, so not every face-unlock implementation qualifies.
- Autofill coverage: A manager may not recognize every field or login flow. Bitwarden documents limits for custom fields and split logins.
- Password fallback: Check when the app may require your account or master password instead of a biometric. Dashlane documents fallback prompts after a device restart and periodically for security.
- Plan requirements: The feature documentation does not establish current prices, free-plan limits, or whether a particular feature requires a paid tier. Check current plan terms before choosing.
Android password managers compared
| Manager | Biometric vault unlock | Android autofill | Documented limits or fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden | Fingerprint or face biometrics using native device APIs. Bitwarden requires Class 3 strength; face unlock availability varies by device. Bitwarden’s biometric guidance | Can be enabled as Android’s autofill service to match vault items to apps or websites. Bitwarden’s Android autofill guide | Mobile autofill does not currently support custom fields or split-login workflows. Bitwarden warns against autofilling into untrusted apps, which could imitate a known package name. Its documentation says it does not receive biometric data. |
| 1Password | Fingerprint, face, or iris, if the device offers the method and it is enabled in device settings. 1Password’s Android unlock guide | Android autofill setup details: not stated in the cited documentation for this comparison. | 1Password says Android reports whether a biometric was recognized; 1Password does not scan or store biometric data. The account password remains part of account protection. 1Password security information |
| Dashlane | App biometrics such as face or fingerprint are documented in its Android overview. Dashlane’s Android overview | Supports autofill in third-party apps and browsers; users select Dashlane in Android settings. Dashlane’s Android overview Dashlane autofill instructions | Users with a Master Password account may need to enter it after restarting the device and periodically for security. Which one should you choose?
Choose Bitwarden if you want documented biometric and autofill setup
Bitwarden clearly documents both Android autofill and biometric unlock, including important caveats. It may be a poor fit if your logins depend on custom fields or split-login forms, which its mobile autofill documentation says are unsupported. Check whether your device’s face or fingerprint authentication meets its Class 3 requirement.
#1 Best Overall
Choose 1Password if your device offers a biometric method you prefer
1Password documents fingerprint, face, and iris unlocking where supported by the device. Its cited material explains how biometric recognition relates to account protection, but does not establish Android autofill setup details for this comparison. Confirm autofill configuration in the current app and Android settings before relying on it.
Choose Dashlane if its documented app and browser autofill fits your workflow
Dashlane documents autofill for third-party apps and browsers, along with face or fingerprint app biometrics. If you use a Master Password account, factor in its documented password prompts after a restart and periodically for security.

Set up biometric autofill safely
- Enable a supported device biometric. In Android settings, set up the fingerprint, face, or other biometric method your device offers. The exact menu path and eligible methods vary by device.
- Turn on biometric unlocking in the manager. Follow the app’s current Android instructions. For Bitwarden, verify that the device biometric meets its Class 3 requirement.
- Select the manager as Android’s autofill service. In Android settings, choose the password manager as the autofill provider. The exact settings path varies by Android version and manufacturer; Dashlane’s instructions explicitly call for selecting it in Android settings.
- Test a login in a trusted app and browser. Confirm that the manager offers the right credential and that the biometric prompt unlocks the vault. Some apps or login fields may not be recognized.
- Keep your account password available. Managers may require it after a restart, for security checks, or when device biometrics are unavailable.
Security and reliability limits to keep in mind
Biometric unlock does not mean the password manager receives or stores a scan. Bitwarden says it uses native device APIs and does not receive biometric data; 1Password says Android reports only whether recognition succeeded and that it does not scan or store the biometric. Both statements describe those vendors’ handling of biometric authentication.
Autofill involves selecting a provider that can interact with app and browser login screens. Bitwarden advises using autofill only with trusted applications because a malicious app could imitate a known package name. If the expected account does not appear, check that the correct provider is selected and consider whether the login form uses unsupported fields or a multi-stage flow.
