Install Wine using instructions for your exact Linux distribution and release, then run winecfg to initialize its default environment and open the configuration window. Wine can run many Windows programs, but compatibility varies by application; no single installation command or configuration guarantees that a particular program will work.
Choose the right Wine installation route
First identify your Linux distribution and release. Use that release’s current documentation or WineHQ’s distribution-specific installation guidance rather than copying a command written for another release. Package names, repositories, architecture support, and dependencies differ between distributions and may change over time.
Choose between your distribution’s supported packages and WineHQ packages by checking release compatibility, package freshness, architecture support, and how updates are delivered. There is no current like-for-like version comparison established here that makes one route the best choice for every user.
Debian and Ubuntu
On 64-bit Debian-family systems, support for 32-bit Windows programs may require i386 multiarch support. Debian guidance also describes newer WoW64 support for running 32-bit programs in a 64-bit prefix, while retaining recommendations for 32-bit packages. Check the current instructions for your release and target application before choosing an architecture or enabling repositories: mixing packages or mismatched library versions can cause broken dependencies. Fedora
Use the current Fedora documentation or WineHQ instructions for your Fedora release. Do not rely on an unverified command copied from a community guide for a different release.
Arch Linux and related distributions
Consult the current Arch package documentation and the requirements of the program you intend to run. Wine package variants may differ in optional components and in support for settings such as WINEARCH; do not assume behavior is identical across packages. The ArchWiki Wine page discusses package variants and separate prefixes.

Initialize Wine with winecfg
After installing Wine, run winecfg from a terminal. The command initializes the default Wine environment if needed and opens Wine’s configuration interface. Ubuntu Community Help describes the default prefix as the hidden ~/.wine directory, containing a simulated C: drive and registry files; treat that page as background on the concept, not as a source of current installation commands: Ubuntu Community Help: Wine.
In the configuration window, settings can include the Windows version reported to programs, drive mappings, DLL overrides, and application-specific options. Change a setting when the target application’s instructions call for it; a Windows-version selection or DLL override is not a general fix for compatibility problems.

Understand prefixes and when to separate them
A Wine prefix is a directory containing a Wine environment, including its drive layout, registry, and application configuration. The default prefix is ~/.wine. Separate prefixes can keep one program’s settings or dependencies from affecting another, but they also create separate environments to manage.
Architecture choices require care. The effect and availability of WINEARCH depend on the Wine version and package. Before creating a prefix, check the documentation for the exact package and the target program’s installation instructions. Install and launch a Windows program
Once Wine is initialized, many Windows installers can be launched through Wine, but the right command, dependencies, and settings depend on the application. Follow the program’s installation guidance and Wine documentation rather than assuming that every installer can be started or completed the same way. Test the specific program on your distribution, Wine version, and chosen prefix.

- Program fails or behaves unexpectedly: Look up the exact application in the Wine Application Database (AppDB) and consult WineHQ’s documentation, FAQ, and wiki. Results for one program do not establish compatibility for another.
- Installation reports missing packages or broken dependencies: Recheck your distribution’s instructions for the release, architecture, repositories, and required libraries. Debian’s multiarch guidance notes that library-version mismatches and incompatible repository combinations can leave dependencies broken.
- A setting or prefix option is unavailable: Verify the behavior for your Wine package and version. Package variants do not necessarily support the same architecture controls.
