gorss is a Go terminal feed reader for reading RSS and Atom feeds in a keyboard-driven, text-based interface. It combines OPML feed import, SQLite-backed articles and read status, configurable keys, themes, search, and ways to open articles or pass them to external commands. It is aimed at readers who prefer working in a terminal rather than managing feeds in a graphical app.
What gorss does
The project describes itself as a “Simple RSS/Atom reader written in Golang. Highly configurable and with themes.” In practical terms, gorss is a text-based RSS reader: it retrieves and presents feed items in a terminal interface, where keyboard shortcuts control navigation and reading actions. It supports RSS and Atom parsing through gofeed, and can load feed URLs from an OPML file.
It is a Go terminal feed reader, not a hosted feed service. Article data and read/unread state are stored locally in SQLite. The project lists Linux and macOS tarballs and a Makefile-based source build; packaging metadata also exists for FreeBSD.
How reading and feed management work
Add feeds or import OPML
Feeds can be configured as URLs or named feed objects. For an existing collection, gorss can read feed URLs from an OPML input file, which is useful when moving subscriptions from another reader. Feed parsing covers both RSS and Atom.

Navigate and manage article status
The interface is built around configurable keyboard bindings. Readers can mark articles read or unread, undo status changes, and apply read-state updates in bulk. Title search and RSS previews help locate and inspect items without leaving the terminal.
Open links and automate actions
gorss can open article links in a browser, including bulk opening marked articles. Configurable custom keys can launch external commands and pass article content, link, feed name, and title. The project warns that command substitution does not escape those values, so only use commands and feed content you trust; take care when constructing commands that interpolate article fields.

Configuration, themes, and storage
The reader is designed as a highly configurable RSS reader with themes. Its configuration covers feed definitions, OPML input, update intervals, retention periods, article-age filtering, notifications, keyboard bindings, panel sizing, and custom commands. Word highlighting can make selected terms easier to spot. System notifications are also supported.
Eight themes are bundled: default, irssi, night, dracula, nord, gruvbox, monokai, and tokyo-night. The default T key cycles themes while the app is running; a theme file can also be selected at startup.

When explicit paths are not supplied, gorss attempts to use $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gorss/gorss.conf for configuration and $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gorss/themes/default.theme for the theme, creating defaults if they are missing. The SQLite database is created automatically under the system data-home directory unless a database path is specified.
Install and choose file paths
The upstream README documents prebuilt Linux and macOS tarballs as well as building with the project’s Makefile. Exact binary names and platform requirements can depend on the release, so use the current instructions in the upstream repository.

At launch, the documented path flags let you select configuration, theme, and database files:
-configselects a configuration file.-themeselects a theme file.-dbselects a SQLite database path.
Leaving these flags out uses the default locations described above. Keeping the database path and configuration paths explicit can be useful if you want a portable setup or separate profiles.
