Tux Paint is free, ad-free drawing software designed especially for children ages 3 to 12. It combines a simple canvas, large labeled controls, drawing tools, stamps, playful sound effects and “Magic” effects, with configuration options for parents and teachers.
What is Tux Paint?
Tux Paint is a computer art program for children, including preschool and K–6 users. The project describes it as a drawing activity that is used in schools around the world, including for computer-literacy activities. The Tux Paint project and the Free Software Foundation describe it as child-focused software.
Children draw on a blank canvas using controls designed to be easy to find and understand. Its playful interface includes a cartoon mascot and sound effects.

The toolset includes freehand brushes, lines, geometric shapes, text, an eraser, and controls for changing tool size. Undo and redo let children reverse or restore recent changes.

Stamps and Magic effects

Can parents and teachers control the experience?

Does Tux Paint cost anything, and is it open source?
Tux Paint is free of charge and advertisements. The project says it is open source, released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and developed by volunteers. The program is distributed digitally; optional drawing tablets or styluses are separate hardware and are not required to use it.

How do you get started?
- Choose the right download: Use the project’s download page for desktop options, or find the official Android edition on Google Play. On a Chromebook, confirm that the device can run Android apps before choosing that edition.
- Install and open the program: Follow the installer or app-store prompts for your device.
- Explore the canvas: Start with a brush or shape, then try stamps, text or Magic effects. Use undo if a change is not wanted.
- Adjust adult settings if needed: Parents and teachers can use the separate configuration tool to change available options for the child or activity.
- Save or present the picture: Save artwork as a PNG, or use the slideshow feature to view drawings.
