If your Samsung Galaxy charges over USB but won’t transfer files, unlock the phone, tap its USB notification, and select Transferring files / Android Auto (or the closest file-transfer option shown). Tap Allow if prompted. On Galaxy devices running One UI 8.0, Samsung says the default is Charging phone only, so you may need to change the mode for file access.
Make the Galaxy available for file transfer
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable, then unlock the Galaxy.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the USB connection or charging notification.
- Select Transferring files / Android Auto. Depending on the model and software, the option may be labelled Transferring files or MTP. Samsung notes that One UI 8.0 defaults to Charging phone only; see Samsung’s USB connection mode instructions.
- If the phone displays Allow access to phone data, tap Allow. Without permission, the computer may show the Galaxy’s name but not its internal folders. Samsung explains this in its guidance on a Galaxy folder that does not appear on a PC.
Menu names can differ by Galaxy model and software version. Choose the file-transfer option actually shown on your phone, rather than relying on an exact label from another device.
If the Galaxy still does not show files on the computer
Try a cable that supports data
A cable can charge a phone without carrying data. Try a different cable that explicitly supports file transfer, and check that its connectors match both the Galaxy and computer. Samsung and Google both identify charge-only cables as a possible cause; see Samsung’s file-transfer troubleshooting and Google’s Android USB transfer steps. An adapter may also be needed if the cable and computer ports differ.

- Connect the cable to a different port on the computer.
- Try the Galaxy with another computer. If it works there, investigate the original computer’s port or device detection.
- Try another device on the original computer’s port to check whether that port recognizes USB hardware.
- Restart both the phone and computer, then reconnect with the Galaxy unlocked and set to file transfer.
These checks help distinguish a phone setting, cable, port, or computer-recognition problem without assuming that charging proves the data connection works.

Reinstall Samsung’s device driver if MTP is not detected
If the phone is set to file transfer but the computer does not detect it or no MTP prompt appears, Samsung recommends disconnecting and restarting the phone, then using Smart Switch on the computer to reinstall the device driver. Open Smart Switch, choose its additional functions, select Reinstall device driver, confirm, and reconnect the phone. Samsung also advises installing the latest device USB driver if the phone-data permission prompt does not appear. Follow Samsung’s Smart Switch and USB troubleshooting guidance; its compatibility requirements vary by platform and software version.
Steps for Windows, Chromebook, and Mac
Windows
After choosing file transfer on the Galaxy, open File Explorer and look for the phone. If you can open it but not see storage, recheck that the phone is unlocked and that you accepted the data-access prompt. Google recommends ejecting the phone from Windows before unplugging it.

Mac
Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting includes Mac-specific software and driver steps, but the cited guidance does not establish one Finder workflow that applies to every Galaxy and macOS combination. Use instructions that match your Mac software and chosen transfer method rather than assuming Finder will display the phone like a USB drive.

Use another transfer route if USB remains inconvenient
If a wired connection is not working or is not practical, Samsung lists cloud storage and wireless options such as Samsung Flow and Quick Share in supported situations. Google also documents Quick Share for Windows. These routes depend on the devices and software involved. Smart Switch is documented for moving data between phones, rather than as a general substitute for browsing a Galaxy’s files on a computer. See Samsung’s Galaxy file-transfer options and Google’s transfer guidance. Not every Galaxy supports microSD cards or high-power external storage, so check the model before relying on an external card or drive.
