The iPad (9th generation) is still worth considering in 2026 if you find it at a substantial discount or buy it used or refurbished. Its A13 Bionic chip, sharp 10.2-inch screen, useful accessory support and continued iPadOS security updates make it capable for everyday tasks. Its dated design, Lightning port and older Pencil compatibility make it a poor buy at a price close to a newer entry-level iPad.
What the iPad 9 offers
Apple introduced the ninth-generation iPad in September 2021 with an A13 Bionic chip, a 10.2-inch Retina display with True Tone, a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage, and support for Apple Pencil (1st generation) and Smart Keyboard. It shipped with iPadOS 15 and doubled the previous generation’s base storage. Apple’s launch price in India was INR 30,900; that is a 2021 launch figure, not a guide to current prices. Apple’s launch announcement and Apple’s India announcement describe the original release.
The hardware includes a 2160×1620-resolution IPS display, Touch ID in the Home button, a Lightning connector and either 64GB or 256GB of storage. Stuff’s review specifies the screen resolution. The 10.2-inch panel is crisp enough for reading, video, web browsing and schoolwork, though its glass is not laminated: when writing with a Pencil, the image and ink sit visibly below the surface of the glass.

Is the iPad 9th generation still worth buying?
Yes, if its condition and price make the compromises worthwhile. The A13 remains responsive for browsing, streaming, reading, schoolwork, note-taking and ordinary App Store apps. The Home button and headphone jack are practical features for some people, and iPadOS gives the tablet access to a broad app library.
#1 Best Overall
Its value falls quickly when the asking price approaches that of a newer base iPad. Newer models offer more modern designs and USB-C, and are likely to provide more processor headroom and a longer useful runway. The ninth-generation model’s older A13 is adequate for common tasks, but it is less suited to demanding workloads and has less headroom for future software.
How it performs for school, work and everyday use
Schoolwork and notes
For assignments, reading, video lessons and handwritten notes, the iPad 9 is a capable budget option. It supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, which can be used for annotation, note-taking and drawing. The non-laminated screen is a noticeable compromise for writing, and the Pencil is an older generation rather than the magnetic-charging second-generation model.

Typing and light productivity
Apple’s Smart Keyboard compatibility makes the iPad suitable for essays, email and other light typing. It can serve as a simple productivity tablet, but it is not a laptop replacement for every workflow. Stuff notes limitations in the Files experience; anyone who relies on complex file management should check that their particular workflow fits iPadOS before buying.
Streaming and general use
The sharp 10.2-inch display and familiar iPad app ecosystem work well for watching video, reading, browsing and casual games. The bezels and Home button make the tablet look older than newer iPads, but do not prevent it from handling these everyday uses.

Does the iPad 9 still get updates?
Apple’s compatibility guide lists iPad (9th generation) as compatible with iPadOS 26.4. Apple’s iPadOS compatibility guide is the reference for that release. Apple’s security-release page also lists iPad (9th generation and later) for iPadOS 27 security releases dated September 14, 2026, as well as iPadOS 26.7 releases. Apple’s security releases page documents those releases.
This confirms current security support as of those listed releases, but it does not guarantee that every future iPadOS feature will be available on this model. Apple says feature availability can vary by device and region.

Which accessories work with iPad 9?
Apple Pencil
The iPad 9 supports Apple Pencil (1st generation), not Apple Pencil (2nd generation). If you are buying a Pencil specifically for this tablet, verify the generation before purchasing; second-generation Pencil magnetic charging is not supported. Apple lists first-generation Pencil support in its launch announcement, and Stuff also discusses the accessory compatibility in its review.

Keyboard and charging
The iPad works with Apple’s Smart Keyboard and compatible keyboard cases. Its Lightning port, however, is less convenient than USB-C for connecting many modern accessories and sharing chargers. Check that any keyboard, case or cable you choose is explicitly compatible with the ninth-generation model.

Is 64GB enough on an iPad?
64GB can work if your use is mostly streaming, web browsing, reading and schoolwork, and you manage downloaded files and apps. It is less comfortable if you keep many large games, videos or offline course materials on the tablet. The model also came in a 256GB configuration, but the best choice depends on how much content you need stored locally and the price difference between units in comparable condition.

Compare the actual cost and condition of the two devices rather than relying on the iPad 9’s original launch price. A newer base iPad makes more sense if the price gap is small and you value a newer chassis, USB-C and more future headroom. The iPad 9 is the better value only when its discount is large enough to compensate for the older design, Lightning connection and first-generation Pencil ecosystem.
| Buying factor | iPad 9th generation | Newer base iPad |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Large bezels and Home button | More modern chassis design |
| Connector | Lightning | USB-C on newer models described in the comparison |
| Processor outlook | A13 Bionic; capable for everyday use, with less headroom for demanding future software | Newer processor platform; exact chip depends on model |
| Pencil ecosystem | Apple Pencil (1st generation); no support for 2nd-generation Pencil | Depends on the specific model |
| Price and condition | Varies by seller, region and whether new-old-stock, used or refurbished | Compare current local price and condition |
The table describes broad trade-offs, not a claim that every newer base iPad has identical display, Pencil or keyboard compatibility. Confirm the exact model’s specifications before purchase.
What to check before buying a used or refurbished iPad 9
- Compare its full asking price with a newer base iPad in similar condition; do not treat the INR 30,900 India launch price as a current market price.
- Confirm whether the listing is new-old-stock, used or refurbished, and check the seller’s return and warranty terms.
- Choose 64GB only if your expected apps and offline content will fit; consider 256GB if you keep substantial media or large apps on the device.
- Make sure any included or separately purchased Pencil is first generation and that any keyboard or case is compatible with the ninth-generation iPad.
- Check the Lightning connector and charging accessories, particularly if the rest of your devices use USB-C.
Verdict
The ninth-generation iPad remains a sensible inexpensive iPad for everyday use, students and light productivity—provided it is meaningfully cheaper than a newer base model. Its ongoing security support strengthens the case for continued use, while its old design, non-laminated display, Lightning port and first-generation Pencil support define the compromises. Buy for the discount, not because its 2021 launch price implies a particular value today.
