You usually don’t need to start a new chat when ChatGPT gets a fact wrong. Reply in the same conversation, point to the specific claim, provide the correction if you know it, and ask ChatGPT to revise that part while keeping the useful context.

Ask for a targeted correction in the same chat

A follow-up message is the simplest way to correct an ordinary factual mistake while preserving the conversation. Identify the inaccurate statement, explain what is wrong or provide the right information, and say what you want changed.

For example: “The date in your last answer is wrong: the event happened on [correct date]. Please correct that sentence and keep the rest of the explanation.” Replace the bracketed text with the actual date. If you don’t know the right answer, say what seems inaccurate and ask ChatGPT to check the claim rather than supplying a guess.

OpenAI’s June 24, 2026 release notes say the model should adapt when users clarify, add constraints, or push back instead of repeating its original approach. That describes expected behavior, not a guarantee that a correction will be accurate. OpenAI ChatGPT release notes.

Choose the right action: correct, regenerate, or start a new chat

Action Use it when What it does
Send a follow-up correction A particular claim is wrong and the conversation is still useful. Asks ChatGPT to fix the claim in context.
Regenerate or retry A response failed or generation got stuck, or you want to retry an answer. Retries the response; it is not the default fix for an ordinary factual mistake.
Start a new chat The conversation itself is long or stuck and troubleshooting calls for a fresh one. Provides a new conversation; you will need to bring over any context you still need.

OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying a failed response and stopping then regenerating a response that hangs. It also lists starting a new chat as a troubleshooting measure for a long or stuck conversation. OpenAI troubleshooting instructions.

The available retry controls vary by interface and account. OpenAI release notes describe a retry menu for responses from Thinking or Pro models, but do not establish one universal control path. If a Regenerate or retry option appears, you can use it to retry; otherwise, send a follow-up correction.

Fix incorrect remembered personal information separately

If an answer is wrong because ChatGPT is using outdated or incorrect information it remembers about you, correcting just one reply may not address the saved information. Tell ChatGPT the remembered detail is wrong or outdated, or edit the memory summary or saved memory if those controls are available. OpenAI explains memory management in its Memory in ChatGPT guide.

Check the revised answer before relying on it

A correction request can improve an answer, but it does not verify it. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT may produce incorrect or misleading information, including fabricated quotations or citations. For an important claim, ask for sources and check the primary source yourself; make sure any cited page actually supports the statement. See OpenAI’s guidance on whether ChatGPT tells the truth.
