Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most people, the right choice is the built-in drive encryption for the laptop they already own: BitLocker or Windows Device Encryption on a Windows PC, and FileVault on a Mac. Neither is a universal security winner. Check that encryption is active, then make sure you can reach its recovery method before you need it.
BitLocker and FileVault: the short comparison
BitLocker is Microsoft’s Windows drive-encryption family. Windows distinguishes automatic Device Encryption, designed for simpler use, from BitLocker Drive Encryption, which supports more advanced scenarios. FileVault protects Mac volumes; what enabling it changes depends in part on the Mac’s hardware generation.
| Question | Windows: Device Encryption / BitLocker | Mac: FileVault |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is available | Device Encryption may be available on Windows Home if the device meets prerequisites. BitLocker Drive Encryption is available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guide explains availability and requirements. | Macs with Apple silicon or a T2 chip encrypt internal data automatically. On those Macs, FileVault adds a layer that requires login credentials. Macs without Apple silicon or T2 need FileVault enabled to encrypt data. See Apple’s FileVault setup guide. |
| What to check | Windows edition, Device Encryption or BitLocker status, device prerequisites, and where the recovery key is stored. | Whether the Mac has Apple silicon, T2, or older hardware; FileVault status; and the chosen recovery route. |
| Recovery credential format | A BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. Microsoft Support. | A FileVault recovery key is a sequence of 24 random numbers and letters. Apple Platform Security. |
| Typical individual decision | Use the encryption your Windows edition and device support, and verify both its status and recovery-key access. | Use FileVault where needed for encryption, and choose a recovery route you can securely access. |
The key formats above are not a measure of relative strength. Both technologies can protect data at rest; this comparison does not establish that one is categorically more secure or faster. Protection also depends on device configuration, account security, recovery-key handling, and administration. The cited vendor documentation does not provide a comparable independent performance benchmark or head-to-head security test.
Which should you use?
If you have a Windows laptop
Start by identifying what is actually enabled rather than assuming every Windows PC has the same BitLocker controls. Device Encryption may be available even on Windows Home, subject to device prerequisites. BitLocker Drive Encryption’s advanced controls are for Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions. Microsoft distinguishes the two in its BitLocker overview and Device Encryption guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Hardware encrypted drive
- Simple to use pin access. RPM-5400
- Administrator password feature
- Bus powered
- Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
For an individual user, built-in encryption that is active and recoverable is a better practical choice than an assumed feature you have not verified. If your PC is managed by work or school, follow the organization’s encryption and recovery process rather than changing settings independently.
If you have a Mac
First check the hardware generation. Apple says Macs with Apple silicon or a T2 chip automatically encrypt internal data; FileVault adds a layer requiring login credentials. On Macs without Apple silicon or T2, you need to turn on FileVault to encrypt your data. Apple’s setup guide covers enabling it.
Rank #2
- Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
- Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0
- Software Free Design - With no admin rights needed
- Sealed from Physical Attacks by Tough Epoxy Coating
- Brute Force Self Destruct Feature
If you turn FileVault on, choose how you will recover access: with your Apple account or with a separate recovery key. Record the separate key somewhere other than the encrypted startup disk, and do not keep it beside the Mac.
If you manage several laptops
Compare operational fit, not just encryption labels. Your decision should account for identity and device-management systems, policy enforcement, recovery-key escrow, access controls, auditability, and who is authorized to recover a user’s device.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
- 3-year limited warranty
Apple documents device-management enforcement and personal recovery-key escrow. Its deployment guidance also describes requirements relevant to managed Macs: Apple Platform Deployment. On Apple silicon, management also involves Secure Token and volume ownership concepts; Apple’s platform security guide describes FileVault and recovery-key behavior. Microsoft says recovery keys may be associated with Microsoft or work/school accounts, or managed by an organization. Confirm the actual escrow and recovery workflow in your environment before rolling out a policy.
Check encryption status and recovery before you need them
Windows: verify the feature and key location
- Open Windows Settings and look for Device encryption. The exact availability and display depend on the device and Windows version. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guide explains how to check and what can prevent the setting from appearing.
- If you have a Pro, Enterprise, or Education PC and need the advanced controls, check BitLocker Drive Encryption as described in Microsoft’s overview.
- Confirm where the recovery key is stored and that you can access it. Depending on setup, it may be attached to a Microsoft account, a work or school account, or managed by your organization. A manually enabled BitLocker drive can use a storage option selected during setup.
- Before a firmware, hardware, or major system change, make sure the recovery key is accessible. BitLocker can request it after changes that resemble unauthorized access, even when the owner is authorized.
Mac: verify FileVault and choose a recovery route
- Open System Settings and select Privacy & Security, then FileVault. Check the displayed status; Apple’s setup guide provides current instructions.
- When enabling FileVault, choose an Apple-account recovery option or a separate recovery key, as offered by macOS.
- If you use a separate key, keep a copy somewhere secure and separate from the encrypted Mac. Losing both the login password and the recovery option can make protected files inaccessible.
What happens if you cannot unlock the laptop?
BitLocker recovery
Windows may show a recovery prompt after a hardware, firmware, or software change, or another condition that triggers its protection. The recovery credential is a unique 48-digit numerical password. Locate it through the account or organization where it was saved; if the laptop belongs to work or school, contact the administrator responsible for recovery. Microsoft explains recovery and activation context in its BitLocker overview.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
FileVault recovery
FileVault setup offers an Apple-account recovery path or a separate recovery key. If the password is forgotten, use the recovery method chosen at setup; Apple’s guide explains the options. A separate FileVault key is 24 random numbers and letters, according to Apple Platform Security. If both the password and recovery option are unavailable, the data may be inaccessible.
Quick Recap
How to keep recovery practical and safe
- Do not assume automatic encryption means you can skip recovery planning. Verify the recovery path while you can still sign in.
- Keep a separate recovery key off the encrypted laptop and away from the device. Avoid leaving it in an unprotected document or sending it by email.
- For managed devices, ask the administrator which team or account holds the key and what verification is required to retrieve it.
- Do not compare a 48-digit BitLocker password with a 24-character FileVault key as though the lengths rank encryption strength; they are different formats.
