To secure your Facebook profile picture, turn on Profile Picture Guard if the option appears on your current picture, then review your profile, tagging and audience settings. The guard can make some kinds of copying harder, but it does not make your current profile picture private: Facebook says that picture is public and can be seen by people on or off Facebook.
What Profile Picture Guard does—and what it does not do
Facebook’s Profile Picture Guard adds protections to your current profile picture. Meta’s published description says other people cannot download, share or send a guarded picture in a Facebook message. People who are not your friends cannot tag anyone, including themselves, in it. Where possible, Facebook also tries to prevent screenshots on Android. A blue border and shield indicate that the guard is active.
These protections are limited. They do not guarantee that nobody can capture the image with another device, take a screenshot in every circumstance, repost it, or copy it outside Facebook. Meta described screenshot prevention as available only on Android in its 2017 announcement, so do not assume it works on other devices or in every current app version. Meta also reported that an extra design layer made people at least 75% less likely to copy a profile picture in a preliminary test; that was an early deterrence result, not a guarantee about the guard’s effectiveness for every user.
How to turn on Profile Picture Guard
- Open your Facebook profile and select your current profile picture.
- Open the picture’s options menu and look for Turn on Profile Picture Guard or a similarly named guard option.
- If the option is shown, follow Facebook’s prompts to enable it.
- Check for the blue border and shield on the picture as an indication that protection is active.
Facebook’s menus and feature availability can vary by account, region, app version and profile type. If you do not see a guard option, the feature may not be available for that account; use the privacy controls Facebook does show you instead. The documented guard behavior comes from Meta’s 2017 description, and interface labels may have changed.

Can you make your Facebook profile picture private?
No—not the current profile picture. Facebook states that the current profile picture and cover photo are public and can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook. Profile Picture Guard can restrict certain actions on the picture, but it does not change that public visibility.
You can adjust the audience for a photo that you previously used as a profile picture. Open that older photo and change its audience using the photo’s privacy control. This does not make the current profile picture private.

Review your profile and tagging privacy
Profile Picture Guard only addresses some risks involving the current image. To review other parts of your Facebook presence, open Settings & privacy > Settings and check the controls for:
- Profile details, posts, stories, reels and followers.
- Public content.
- Profile and tagging.
- Blocking.
These settings let you manage other profile information and interactions; they do not override Facebook’s statement that your current profile picture is public. The options available can differ by profile type.

Secure your account separately
A protected picture does not prevent someone from trying to access your account. Turn on login alerts and two-factor authentication in Facebook’s account-security settings. If you prefer a physical authenticator, Facebook documents compatible U2F/FIDO2 security keys. Check that a key works with your device and browser before relying on it. A security key protects login access; it does not hide your picture or stop someone from copying an image they can see.
