To change your keyboard language, add the desired keyboard layout or input source in your device’s settings, then select it while typing. The steps differ by platform. This changes what you can type—not necessarily the language used for menus and system text.
Keyboard language or device language: which do you mean?
A keyboard layout changes which characters your physical keys produce. An input method may also convert keystrokes into another writing system, such as Japanese or Chinese. Your device’s interface language is separate: it controls menus and system text. Use the keyboard steps below if you want to type in another language; change the device’s language settings if you want its menus to appear in another language.
Windows 11: add a keyboard and switch layouts
Add a layout
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Beside the relevant language, select the more-options menu, then choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard and choose the layout.
You may be able to add a layout without installing its matching full language pack. If the layout you want is not listed under one language, Microsoft advises checking the language that matches that layout. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard and language instructions.
Switch between installed layouts
Select the input-language icon in the taskbar and choose a layout, or press Windows key + Space to cycle through installed layouts. If the shortcut appears to do nothing, check whether you have more than one layout installed.

Windows 10: add a keyboard and switch layouts
Windows 10 uses different settings labels: open Settings > Time & language > Language, select the language, then open its Options page and add a keyboard. Switch layouts using the taskbar input icon or Windows key + Space. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these are Windows 10 navigation steps, not a statement that the operating system is still supported. Mac: add and select an input source
Add an input source
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, select Edit.
- Select Add, search for a language, choose an input source, and add it.
Switch input sources
Select a source from the menu bar’s Input menu. Depending on your settings and hardware, you may also be able to switch with Control-Space or Control-Option-Space, or configure the Fn/Globe key to change input source. Shortcuts depend on configuration; Apple also notes that Caps Lock switching is available for a non-Latin source. An input source may appear dimmed when the current app does not support it. To change the language shown in macOS and apps, use System Settings > General > Language & Region instead. Keyboard settings manage input sources; Language & Region manages the displayed language. Adding an input source can also add that language to the preferred-language list, but it does not make these settings the same. See Apple’s system-language instructions.
iPhone: add a keyboard and switch while typing
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard and select a language.
- While typing, touch and hold the Emoji button or keyboard-switch key, then choose the keyboard you want.
Apple also provides controls for changing the onscreen or external keyboard layout. Selecting another keyboard does not require changing the iPhone’s system language. See Apple’s iPhone keyboard guide.

Android: check the keyboard app and device
Android menu paths depend on the device and keyboard app. The Google guide available here is for iPhone and iPad, so it does not establish Android steps. For accurate directions, identify your keyboard app (such as Gboard), Android version, and device maker, then follow that app’s Android-specific instructions. Avoid assuming a single Android settings path applies to every phone.
