Open Settings and check the date labeled Android security update or Android security patch level. For the September 2026 Android Security Bulletin, a patch level of 2026-09-05 or later covers all applicable issues in that bulletin and earlier bulletins; 2026-09-01 covers an earlier subset. The September bulletin includes critical vulnerabilities, including a System flaw that could allow remote code execution without user interaction.
How to check your Android security patch level

Open Settings and look for Security, Security & privacy, or your phone’s software-update information. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Find the date labeled Android security update or Android security patch level. If you cannot find it, use Settings search for “security update” or check the Android version or software information screen.

Compare that date with the relevant Android Security Bulletin’s stated patch level. A newer date is not proof that every manufacturer-specific fix is installed, so also check the phone maker’s security notices for your model.

If your phone offers an Android system update, review and install it, then restart if prompted. Update availability and timing differ by device and manufacturer; there is no universal rollout deadline.
What the September 2026 patch levels mean
The Android Open Source Project published its September 2026 Android Security Bulletin on September 8 and updated it on September 16. It defines two patch levels so manufacturers can distribute some fixes sooner while indicating when the full set is covered.

Patch-level dates identify the fixes a device update is intended to include; they do not mean every Android phone receives the update on that date. Check the bulletin that matches the month and patch level shown on your device.
Why critical Android vulnerabilities make updates important
The September 2026 bulletin says its most severe issue is a critical System-component vulnerability that could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges required. It also lists critical Framework elevation-of-privilege and denial-of-service issues, as well as multiple critical System remote-code-execution and elevation-of-privilege issues.

Remote code execution can let an attacker cause code to run on a device; elevation of privilege concerns gaining permissions beyond those already held; and denial of service can disrupt a device or service. For the bulletin’s most severe System issue, user interaction is not required. Until the relevant update is installed, the phone lacks the fixes documented for that patch cycle.
Android platform updates, Google Play updates, and manufacturer firmware
These update channels are related, but they are not interchangeable. The Android security patch level is the clearest date to compare with an Android Security Bulletin; Google Play system updates and manufacturer firmware can address other components or device-specific issues.

Android fixes can draw on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the upstream Linux kernel, and system-on-chip manufacturers. The AOSP bulletin overview says platform fixes are typically merged into AOSP 24–48 hours after quarterly security bulletins. Phone makers may publish additional product-specific bulletins, and Android model coverage and rollout timing vary.

Check again for system updates. A newer patch may be available for your model even if it has not installed automatically.

Check the manufacturer’s notice for your exact model. An Android platform bulletin does not establish when every manufacturer will distribute its update or whether a product has extra fixes.

Use the displayed patch date, not just the Android version number. The Android version and security patch level are separate pieces of update information.
Official bulletins document the vulnerabilities and patch levels, but they do not establish a current percentage of Android devices patched, a user-exposure count, or a universal manufacturer rollout deadline.
