To share files across a wide area network (WAN), connect the remote user or office to the file server through an authenticated private path: usually a point-to-site VPN for individual users or a site-to-site VPN for offices. SMB over QUIC is an option for supported Windows deployments, and an encrypted overlay can suit a small NAS setup. Keep public TCP port 445 blocked; do not expose ordinary SMB directly to the Internet.
Choose a private connection method
The right design depends on how many people need access, which file server and client platforms you use, and who will administer identities, routes, and devices.
| Option | Best fit | Security boundary | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Point-to-site VPN | Individual teleworkers or traveling users | A separate tunnel connects each client to the private network. | Configure each client, identity, routes, and DNS. TCP 445 remains closed at the public edge. |
| Site-to-site VPN with a private endpoint | Branch offices and many on-premises clients accessing a cloud file share | A private network path joins the sites; access to a cloud share uses its private endpoint. | Requires VPN gateway and route configuration, private DNS forwarding, and endpoint access controls. |
| SMB over QUIC | Supported Windows Server and Windows 11 deployments | SMB traffic is carried in a TLS 1.3-encrypted QUIC tunnel. | Requires server opt-in and certificate lifecycle management; plan for account lockout and intrusion monitoring. The default transport uses UDP 443. |
| Encrypted overlay | Home NAS access and small teams | Approved devices connect through an encrypted peer-to-peer network. | Install clients, define device and user policy, and use stable names such as MagicDNS where supported. |
A VPN provides the broadest network integration. SMB over QUIC is a focused transport for supported Windows file-server deployments. An encrypted overlay can simplify remote NAS access for a small, managed group. Compare platform support, administration, DNS and routing complexity, auditability, key or certificate rotation, and service cost before choosing.
Why you should not open TCP 445 to the Internet
Ordinary SMB was designed for private networks, not as a public-facing file service. Microsoft recommends blocking inbound and outbound SMB over TCP 445 at Internet-facing firewalls. Opening the port would expose the SMB service directly rather than limiting access to authenticated clients on a private path.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Microsoft also warns that enabling file sharing changes firewall settings and can create a security risk. Enable sharing only on trusted network profiles; changing a sharing setting on a computer does not make direct Internet exposure safe.
Plan and configure the connection

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Inventory access needs. Identify the file server or NAS, client operating systems, identity source, WAN links, required shares, and the users who need each share.
- Select the transport. Choose point-to-site for individual remote clients, site-to-site for connected offices, SMB over QUIC for supported Windows deployments, or an encrypted overlay for a small device group.
- Keep the public edge closed to SMB. Leave inbound TCP 445 blocked on Internet-facing firewalls. Permit only the transport required by the selected design, such as the VPN transport, QUIC over UDP 443 by default, or the overlay’s required connectivity.
- Limit file access. Set least-privilege share and filesystem permissions, require strong authentication, and configure account lockout protections.
- For a private cloud share, verify routes and DNS. Configure private endpoint routing and conditional DNS forwarding. Before mounting the share, confirm that its file-share hostname resolves to a private IP address, not a public one.
- Test and monitor. Test from a representative remote client, confirm the intended share and permissions work, enable inbound SMB auditing, and review logs during rollout.
- Document recovery and offboarding. Record how to rotate certificates or keys, remove a departing user or device, and restore access after a configuration failure.
Access Azure Files through a VPN
For individual users
Microsoft’s point-to-site VPN guidance describes accessing Azure Files over SMB from outside Azure without opening TCP 445 on the public edge. Each remote client needs the VPN configuration, suitable identity and authorization, and routes and DNS that allow it to reach the share privately.
For an office network
A site-to-site VPN connects the office network to the cloud network, but the VPN alone does not ensure that a file-share connection takes the private path. Configure routing to the private endpoint and DNS forwarding so the file-share fully qualified domain name resolves to its private IP. Verify both before mounting the share.

When SMB over QUIC is a fit
SMB over QUIC carries SMB through an encrypted tunnel using TLS 1.3; Microsoft describes it as an “SMB VPN” for telecommuters, mobile users, and high-security organizations. It uses UDP 443 by default, not public TCP 445. It is only an option where the server and clients are supported, and it requires the server to opt in and the organization to manage its certificate lifecycle.
Microsoft documents SMB controls that include encryption, signing, NTLM blocking, authentication-rate limiting, and WAN-oriented performance features. Which controls are available and how to configure them depends on the deployment; select and verify the controls appropriate to the server and clients rather than treating the transport as a substitute for access policy.

When an encrypted overlay is a fit
For a home NAS or small team, an encrypted overlay such as Tailscale can connect approved remote devices to NAS and file services without exposing those services through public firewall ports. Use its device and user policy controls to restrict which clients can reach the file server, and a stable name such as MagicDNS when available. This approach still needs deliberate permissions on the NAS and a process for removing or revoking access when a device or user should no longer connect.

Check the design before rollout
- Public exposure: Confirm Internet-facing rules block TCP 445 and expose only the transport required for the chosen design.
- Identity and authorization: Test with a normal user account and verify that share and filesystem permissions grant only the required access.
- Name resolution and routing: Confirm the client reaches the intended private server address; for a private cloud share, verify private DNS resolution and endpoint routing.
- Monitoring: Enable inbound SMB auditing and review logs during rollout; apply account lockout and intrusion monitoring where required.
- Lifecycle: Know how to rotate certificates or keys, revoke a device or user, and recover the connection before relying on it for routine work.
