To read a web page without an internet connection, save it while you’re still online—using your browser’s Reading List, its download option, a webpage file, or a PDF. The best choice depends on your device and whether you want a quick in-browser copy or a portable document. Save a test page and open it with connectivity turned off before relying on it during travel or an outage.

Choose a format that fits how you’ll read

Method What it saves Best for What to keep in mind
Reading List A page saved within your browser; Safari can automatically save Reading List items for offline access when that setting is enabled. Keeping articles handy in the same browser. Chrome’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe adding a page to Reading List and reopening it later; they do not describe creating a standalone file. [Google Chrome Help]
Browser download or saved webpage A copy of a page, sometimes with a separate folder of supporting files. Keeping a webpage on your device or retaining its page assets. How much of the page is saved depends on the browser and format. A complete-page save may rely on a companion folder.
Text file Page text without its original link structure. Reading text when images and layout are not needed. Firefox’s text option does not preserve the original link structure. [Mozilla Support]
PDF A rendered document version of the page. Keeping or sharing a portable document. A PDF is not the same as an interactive webpage; do not expect site features to work as they do online.

None of these formats guarantees that every site asset or feature will be available offline. Dynamic content, embedded media, or pages that require a sign-in may behave differently from the displayed copy. The browser instructions explain how to save and open copies, but do not promise that every site will save completely.

Save a page on Android with Chrome

  1. While connected to the internet, open the page in Chrome. Google says, “You need to be online to save a page.” [Google Chrome Help]
  2. Tap More, then Download.
  3. To find the saved copy later, tap More > Downloads, then select the page. You can also long-press an item there to manage or share it.

This downloads a page; it is separate from saving something to a browser Reading List. [Google Chrome Help]

Save a page on iPhone or iPad

Safari: Add to Reading List and enable offline saving

  1. In Safari, open the page, tap Share, then choose Add to Reading List.
  2. To have Safari save Reading List items for offline access automatically, open Settings > Apps > Safari and turn on Automatically Save Offline under Reading List.

Safari’s Reading List is a browser feature rather than a standalone PDF export. Menu placement or wording may differ by iOS version. [Apple Support]

Firefox: Choose what the saved page includes

In Firefox, open File > Save Page As… and choose the format that matches what you need:

  • Web page, complete: saves the page and supporting files, such as pictures, in a new directory. Keep that directory with the saved page. Mozilla notes that this option may not preserve the original link structure.
  • Web page, HTML only: keeps the page’s HTML and link structure, but not its pictures.
  • Text files: saves the text without the original link structure.
  • All files: Mozilla describes this as equivalent to HTML only, with a user-specified extension.

These distinctions are useful if you plan to move the saved page: separating the complete-page file from its supporting directory can leave the copy without assets. [Mozilla Support]
