Raspberry Pi’s longevity chart shows the Pi 1 Model B+ software-support horizon reaching 2026, while its product pages say the Model B+ and Model A+ will remain in production until at least January 2030. Those dates describe different things: software support and hardware production.
Raspberry Pi OS Legacy 32-bit still lists the 1A+ and 1B+ as compatible, and Raspberry Pi’s downloads page lists a release dated 15 September 2026. That confirms a compatible image was available then; it is not a promise of updates indefinitely.

What does “support ending” mean for Raspberry Pi 1?
There are two separate lifecycle questions: whether Raspberry Pi will continue producing a board, and whether Raspberry Pi OS will continue receiving software support on it. A production horizon is not an operating-system update guarantee.
| Lifecycle measure | What the published information says | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pi 1 Model B+ production | Raspberry Pi says it will remain in production until at least January 2030. Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ product page | The board is planned to remain in production through at least that date; this does not establish OS support through 2030. |
| Pi 1 Model A+ production | Raspberry Pi gives the same minimum production horizon: January 2030. Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+ product page | Production availability and software support remain distinct. |
| Pi 1B+ software-support chart | The Raspberry Pi Ltd longevity document, updated 22 April 2026, shows the Pi 1B+ software-support bar reaching 2026. Longevity Marketing Document | This is a charted support horizon, not a published universal shutdown day for every Pi 1 use or model. |
| Compatible Raspberry Pi OS Legacy image | The downloads page lists Legacy 32-bit for the 1A+ and 1B+, with a 15 September 2026 release based on Debian 12 (Bookworm) and kernel 6.12. Raspberry Pi OS downloads | A compatible image was still listed on that date; the listing is not an indefinite future-update commitment. |
Can you still run Raspberry Pi OS on a Pi 1?
Yes. Raspberry Pi OS Legacy 32-bit remains listed as compatible with the Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+ and Model B+. The 15 September 2026 listing is evidence of a recent compatible release, but Raspberry Pi has not published a single calendar day when all Pi 1 software support will stop.

Raspberry Pi’s industrial-customer announcement says it guarantees product lifetimes until at least 2026 on all products. Industrial customer announcement This broad product-lifetime statement does not replace the model-specific production statements or establish an exact OS shutdown date.
Is the Pi 1 obsolete in 2026?
Not simply because a charted software-support horizon reaches 2026. A Pi 1 can still suit a fixed-purpose project that works with the available Legacy image and its hardware. The practical risk is that its update horizon is less certain than its production horizon, and older software and accessories may constrain what you can run.
For a new build, judge the decision by the application’s needs rather than the word “obsolete.” A lightweight, already-tested task may remain serviceable; a project that depends on current software, newer peripherals, or a long, predictable operating-system lifecycle is a stronger candidate for migration.
Should you replace a Pi 1 before support ends?
There is no universal need to replace a working board on a specific 2026 date: the published material does not give one. Instead, compare your project against these practical factors:

Rank #3
- Model: Raspberry Pi 4 B
- Board Type: Development
- Main component: motherboard
- Color: Green
- Processor: Broadcom BCM2711 Quad-core ARM v8 64-bit SoC
- Software-update horizon: the longevity chart reaches 2026 for Pi 1B+, while the Legacy image listing confirms compatibility as of September 2026 without promising future updates.
- Production availability: the 1A+ and 1B+ product pages list production through at least January 2030, but retailer stock can vary.
- Application performance: if the task is too slow or cannot run required software, continued production does not solve that limitation.
- Accessory and image compatibility: check that the operating-system image and connected hardware explicitly support your model.
- Migration cost: retaining the Pi 1 may avoid replacing a working installation and its accessories; moving to another board may require adapting storage, power, software, or the enclosure.
- Industrial lifecycle risk: if a product depends on a predictable support commitment, confirm the relevant model and software terms with Raspberry Pi or an authorized supplier rather than treating the production date as a support guarantee.
What should you buy or maintain for a Raspberry Pi 1?
If you need another board, the relevant product is the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+; Raspberry Pi lists it as remaining in production until at least January 2030. Actual retailer inventory and pricing are not established here, so check availability and the exact model before ordering.
The official board specification identifies microSD storage and a 5V micro-USB power input. Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ specifications When replacing either item, verify connector fit and electrical compatibility, and back up the card before changing its operating-system image. A newer board is not automatically a drop-in replacement: confirm that your software, peripherals, and project setup work with it before migrating.

How to decide: keep the Pi 1 or migrate
- Identify the exact model. Check whether the board is a 1A+ or 1B+; compatibility and the cited support chart are model-specific.
- Check the project’s requirements. List the operating system, applications, and accessories it needs, then confirm they work with Raspberry Pi OS Legacy 32-bit.
- Test the current installation. If it meets the project’s needs, preserve a backup and plan for the possibility that future compatible updates may not continue.
- Migrate when a requirement fails. Choose another board only after checking software and peripheral compatibility, then test the replacement before retiring the Pi 1.
