Yes—multi-TT USB 2.0 hubs can perform better when multiple USB 1.x devices are active at the same time. A multi-TT hub gives each downstream port its own transaction translator; a single-TT hub makes classic-speed devices share one. That can reduce contention between full-speed (12 Mbps) and low-speed (1.5 Mbps) devices, but it does not add bandwidth to the hub’s shared 480 Mbps upstream connection.

What does a transaction translator do?

A USB 2.0 high-speed hub connects to the host over USB’s 480 Mbps high-speed link. When a full-speed or low-speed device is attached, the hub’s transaction translator (TT) converts between the host’s high-speed traffic and the slower device’s USB traffic. USB 2.0 uses split transactions for this work: the host can schedule other high-speed activity while a slower operation completes. Infineon’s application note explains this scheduling model.

Single-TT and multi-TT compared

Hub mode Translator arrangement Effect on full-/low-speed devices
Single-TT One translator is shared across downstream ports. Classic-speed devices contend for the same translated path.
Multi-TT Each downstream port has its own translator and buffers. Classic-speed transactions on separate ports can be handled in parallel.

In Infineon’s terminology, these arrangements are also called TT/Hub (single-TT) and TT/Port (multi-TT). The distinction matters for full- and low-speed devices; it is not a way to make high-speed devices faster.

When does multi-TT improve performance?

The difference is most relevant when several full-speed or low-speed peripherals transfer data concurrently—for example, multiple USB 1.x audio, input, serial, or other classic-speed devices. Separate translators can overlap work that would otherwise queue behind a shared translator. With only one active full-/low-speed device, or with only high-speed devices, a second translator has little or no classic-speed contention to relieve.

Infineon states that the theoretical maximum bandwidth for classic-speed devices is 12 Mbps multiplied by the number of enabled TTs. This is a ceiling, not a prediction of application throughput: USB framing, split-transaction scheduling, host-controller behavior, device endpoint limits, and competition for the shared upstream link all constrain delivered performance. Multi-TT does not create separate 480 Mbps links.

How to tell whether a hub is multi-TT

Do not infer multi-TT capability from “USB 2.0” alone. The product listing or documentation should explicitly identify multi-TT or MTT. A hub’s implementation and host behavior also matter: a host can force single-TT operation even when the hub controller supports a translator per port. For example, Microchip’s USB2504/USB2504A datasheet describes selecting either one shared TT or a dedicated TT for each port, while noting that the host may force single-TT mode.

For USB descriptors, Microsoft documents bDeviceProtocol value 0x01 for single-TT and 0x02 for multi-TT. The interface descriptor’s bInterfaceProtocol also distinguishes the modes. Microsoft says Windows’ Usbhub.sys enables multi-TT mode when a hub reports multi-TT capability. See Microsoft’s USB 2.0 hub features documentation.

Which type should you choose?

  • Choose multi-TT if several full-speed or low-speed peripherals are likely to be active together and the hub and host support multi-TT operation.
  • Single-TT may be sufficient if your attached devices are all high-speed, or if only one full-/low-speed device will be active at a time.
  • Check the exact model for an explicit multi-TT/MTT specification. Port count, power capability, and price are product-specific; USB 2.0 branding alone does not establish any of them.
