Google changed Gmail’s icon as part of a wider redesign of Google Workspace app icons. Gmail keeps its familiar envelope-shaped “M,” but its colors now blend into a gradient, with more red in the Android app icon. The update is cosmetic: Gmail’s features and administrative controls are unchanged.
What is the new Gmail icon?
The new icon retains Gmail’s recognizable envelope/M silhouette, while replacing the older, more clearly separated color segments with a blended gradient treatment. On Android, the redesigned app icon also has a stronger red presence. Google describes the wider Workspace refresh as a way to give each app a more distinct identity while keeping the product suite visually cohesive.
Gmail remains the four-color exception in the refreshed Workspace family. Reporting by 9to5Google says many of the other app icons use more selective palettes and no longer sit inside the shared page-shaped frame used by older icons.
Why did Google change the Gmail icon?
Google announced the Workspace icon update on May 26, 2026, saying it was introducing “a modern visual design that gives every app a more distinct identity.” The company said the changes were intended to improve consistency across the suite while keeping individual apps recognizable. Gmail’s updated colors also fit Google’s broader gradient-led brand direction: in a September 29, 2025 announcement, Google connected brighter four-color gradients with AI-driven innovation and creative energy across its products.

That explains the visual direction, not a new Gmail capability. Google’s announcement says the redesign does not change core functionality or administrative controls.
When did the Gmail icon change?
The rollout happened in stages across platforms. 9to5Google reported the redesigned icons first appearing on the web on May 18, 2026, and said Workspace app icons had been updated on iOS by May 26. Google’s May 26 announcement said the extended rollout for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains had started May 19 and could take more than 15 days to appear. On June 4, 9to5Google reported that the Android rollout was complete, with Gmail the last app in the set to receive its updated icon.

Google said the automatic rollout applies to all Google Workspace users. There is no setting for users or administrators to switch the new icon on or off.
Did Gmail change its logo on Android?
Yes. The regular Gmail app icon on Android changed to the gradient design, with more red than before. The Android status-bar icon did not change, according to 9to5Google’s June 4 rollout report. The updated app icon keeps the familiar envelope/M shape, so the change is mainly in color rather than silhouette.

Does the new Gmail icon change anything?
No Gmail features, settings, or administrative controls are added or removed by this icon refresh. Google says the design changes do not alter core functionality or admin controls; the update arrives automatically rather than through a user or admin setting. It should be understood as a Workspace visual-identity update, not a Gmail feature release.

What the Workspace-wide update means
The Gmail refresh was one part of a suite-wide icon update, rather than a change limited to Gmail. The updated family included Calendar, Tasks, Chat, Meet, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Keep, and Voice. Google’s stated aim was to give apps more distinct identities without losing a cohesive look across Workspace. Individual reactions to the new appearance are subjective; the available announcements do not establish whether users recognize or prefer the icons more readily.
