It was a promising way to survey hazardous ground without putting a person directly over every part of it—not a certified or battlefield-proven demining system.
How did the Quadcopter Mines Detector work?
Klymenko’s prototype combined a quadcopter, a hanging metal detector, an Arduino board and a computer program he wrote in C++. The detector’s suspended position let it pass over the ground while the drone carried it.
- Set up the survey: Before flight, the operator recorded GPS coordinates at a stationary location and entered the scan area’s length and width.
- Fly the detector over the area: The quadcopter carried the metal detector. A gyroscope detected the effects of wind, which could affect the hanging sensor.
- Signal a metal detection: When the detector sensed metal, it sent an infrared signal to a phototransistor connected to an Arduino board held by the operator.
- Calculate a location: Klymenko’s C++ program used the time between launch and detection, the drone’s speed and launch timing to calculate the detection’s relative position and convert it into GPS coordinates.
In the 2022 account, the reported coordinate precision was within two centimeters of the scan’s reference point. That is a reported prototype result, not proof that the system could locate every mine to that precision in varied field conditions.
What drone and sensor did Klymenko use?
The reported build used an F5 PRO quadcopter carrying a suspended metal detector. A gyroscope, infrared signaling, a phototransistor and an Arduino board formed part of the detection and position-calculation setup. The source does not identify a specific metal-detector model.

How accurate and practical was it?
The 2022 report gave a flight endurance of 20 to 30 minutes and a range of up to five miles. It also said that the prototype could take about two to three weeks to scan one square kilometre and calculate mine coordinates. These are reported figures for the prototype, not independently established specifications for a current product; the account noted that performance parameters could change with more expensive equipment.
The article described laboratory trials and outdoor tests in low grass and slow wind, including adjustments to input data and component spacing. Klymenko said the detector was tested against anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. Those conditions are narrower than the rubble, vegetation, weather and varied terrain that can complicate real mine clearance.

Can a drone find landmines safely?
A drone can keep a human operator farther from the immediate search area and reach places where a ground vehicle carrying a detector might struggle. Geophysicist Tim Bechtel of Franklin and Marshall College called the idea particularly useful in urban areas with rubble, where other vehicles may have trouble getting around.
That does not make the method risk-free or establish that a detection is safe to act on. Mines vary, and the 2022 report quoted Klymenko warning that some can be triggered by ground vibrations. A drone-based detector also needs reliable positioning and careful interpretation of what its sensor detects. The account does not establish battlefield deployment, certification or operational validation of this prototype.

How does it compare with other mine-detection drone approaches?
The Smithsonian report described other research approaches that use different sensors and workflows. They provide context for the field, but their reported capabilities should not be treated as direct head-to-head comparisons with Klymenko’s prototype.

Why is mine detection important?
The 2022 Smithsonian account placed the invention in a serious humanitarian context: it reported 7,073 people killed or injured by mines or explosive remnants of war in 2020, with civilians accounting for about 80 percent of those casualties. It also cited an estimate that as many as 110 million land mines may be buried across about 60 countries. In the same report, it gave the estimate that for every 5,000 successfully removed land mines, one deminer is killed and two are injured.

Who is Igor Klymenko, and what did he win?
Klymenko developed the drone while sheltering with his family during Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In the September 2022 account, he had built two working prototypes and held two Ukrainian patents. He won the $100,000 Chegg.org Global Student Prize in 2022.
In his award remarks reproduced by James Madison University, Klymenko dedicated the recognition to people in his homeland, saying they were heroes who deserved to be recognised. He also said he hoped the invention could save lives and inspire students.

What features were planned, rather than established?
The 2022 account mentioned possible future additions: ground-penetrating radar, spray-paint marking and AI classification. These were proposed improvements, not features documented as completed in the reported prototype.
