Common 3D printer features solve different problems: auto bed leveling maps surface unevenness, direct drive describes how filament is fed, and input shaping adjusts motion to reduce vibration effects. Runout sensors and power-loss recovery can help protect a long print, while enclosures and cameras address material conditions and monitoring. Their value depends on the printer, its firmware, and what you plan to print—not the number of labels on a spec sheet.
What to check before comparing features
A feature name tells you what a printer is designed to do, but not how well it will do it or whether it suits your work. Compare the model’s build volume, supported materials and any chamber requirements, extruder arrangement, calibration method, motion system, recovery behavior, included accessories, and software or connection options. Manufacturer specifications confirm listed features; they are not independent performance rankings. Check the exact model’s current documentation because firmware support and accessory availability can change.
How does automatic bed leveling work?
A probe or sensor samples multiple points on the build surface. The printer’s firmware uses those readings to create a height map and compensate for local variation as it lays down the first layer. Despite the name, the process does not necessarily move the bed or physically make it level; it reduces the need to adjust the bed manually and helps maintain a consistent nozzle-to-sheet relationship.
Procedures vary. Prusa’s documentation describes probing points to create a virtual map, while its newer load-cell models probe the area selected for a print. Debris on the bed or pressure on it during probing can interfere with calibration. A successful mesh cannot fix every first-layer problem: the sheet still needs to be clean, material settings must be suitable, and the printer’s hardware must work correctly. Prusa’s mesh bed-leveling guidance explains the process and its limits.

What is the difference between direct drive and Bowden feed?
Both terms describe where the filament drive sits. In a direct-drive arrangement, the drive mechanism is at or near the hotend. With Bowden feed, a motor farther away pushes filament through a tube to the hotend. The layout is worth checking when comparing printers, but the label alone does not establish which materials a machine can print reliably.
Look at the complete printer-and-filament specification for the material you intend to use. For example, Creality identifies the Ender-3 V3 Plus as direct drive and separately lists TPU among its supported materials. That is a claim about that specific printer, not a universal guarantee that every direct-drive printer will handle every flexible filament. Creality’s Ender-3 V3 Plus specifications list the drive arrangement and supported materials.
What does input shaping do?
Input shaping modifies commanded motion to reduce the effects of vibration in the printer’s frame or toolhead. This can help control visible ringing or ghosting when the printer makes fast movements. The actual result depends on the machine’s setup, tuning, firmware, and print; the feature name alone does not promise a specific surface finish or print time.

Support is model- and firmware-specific. Creality lists input shaping for the Ender-3 V3 Plus, while Prusa documents the models and firmware versions that support its implementation. Check the current documentation for the exact printer rather than assuming that a feature available on one model applies to another. Prusa’s input-shaper documentation describes its supported models and firmware.

Filament runout sensing
A runout sensor detects filament presence or movement, depending on its design. On the Original Prusa MK4, Prusa says a Hall sensor detects when filament runs out, pauses the print, and notifies the user to change spools. A basic runout sensor should not be assumed to detect a tangle or a clog; those conditions need different detection logic or hardware. Prusa’s MK4 announcement describes that model’s behavior.
Power-loss recovery
Recovery features save enough print state for a printer to attempt to continue after an interruption. Prusa calls its feature “Power panic,” and Creality lists “Power Loss Recovery” for the Ender-3 V3 Plus. Treat either label as a recovery aid, not a guarantee that a print will resume successfully after every outage: the saved state, firmware, interruption, and whether the part remains attached can all matter. The manufacturers’ descriptions do not establish one behavior that applies to every printer.

Do you need an enclosure or a heated chamber?
An enclosure surrounds the print area; a heated chamber actively warms it. Those are not interchangeable features. A more stable warm environment can matter for materials that need particular print conditions, but not every printer or material requires an enclosure.
Creality says the Ender-3 V3 Plus needs an additional enclosure for ABS and other higher-temperature materials. Check the specific printer’s material guidance and chamber requirements before buying or printing a material; do not infer that an enclosure is included or actively heated just because a printer supports a material. Creality’s product page states the requirement for that model.
What can a printer camera do?
A camera can let you monitor progress remotely, make time-lapse footage, or provide input to an automated failure-detection feature. For the Ender-3 V3 Plus, Creality describes the optional Nebula Camera as supporting real-time monitoring, time-lapse, and AI-based failure detection. These are vendor-described functions, not a promise that the system will identify every failed print. Verify whether a camera is included or optional on the model you are considering.

What do motion-system labels, dual Z, and stability features mean?
Motion-system terms describe how the printer drives its axes. Creality describes the Ender-3 V3 Plus’s CoreXZ design as linking X and Z motion, with two motors working together; it also lists two Y-axis motors. The product page says support rods reduce Z-axis shaking. These details explain the model’s design and the manufacturer’s stability claim, but a motion-system name or extra motor does not by itself guarantee a particular speed or print quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do nozzle and build-plate details matter?
Nozzle diameter affects how much material can be extruded at once and the level of detail a print can capture; nozzle material affects abrasion resistance. A removable or flexible build plate can make finished parts easier to remove. These are practical differences to weigh against your materials and work, rather than standalone measures of overall printer quality.
Creality lists a quick-swap hardened-tip nozzle and a flexible build plate for the Ender-3 V3 Plus. That establishes what the manufacturer specifies for that model, not a comparative test against other printers. Check the exact nozzle and plate supplied with any model you are considering.

How should you decide which features matter?
- For reliable first layers: Check the calibration method and sensor, then make sure the printer’s instructions cover surface cleanliness and setup.
- For a particular material: Verify that the manufacturer lists it as supported and check whether an enclosure or other print conditions are required. For example, Creality lists PLA, TPU, PETG, ABS, and composite materials for the Ender-3 V3 Plus, with an additional enclosure required for ABS and other higher-temperature materials on that machine.
- For flexible filament: Treat direct drive as one design detail, not proof of compatibility; confirm the printer’s material specification.
- For faster motion: Look for input-shaping support on the exact model and firmware, but do not treat the feature as a guaranteed speed or finish.
- For unattended or long prints: Check what the runout sensor detects, what the recovery function promises, and whether monitoring hardware is included or optional.
- For consumables and upkeep: Check nozzle type, plate serviceability, and compatibility with the filament you plan to use.
Creality lists a maximum speed of 600 mm/s and a typical speed of 300 mm/s for the Ender-3 V3 Plus. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model, not general expectations for 3D printers; a speed figure should be considered alongside material support, motion control, and the result you need.
Do you need a filament dryer?
Not every spool needs a dryer. Creality lists its Space Pi Filament Dryer as an optional accessory and describes temperature settings for 11 filament types. Use the filament maker’s storage and preparation guidance for the specific material rather than treating a dryer as a universal requirement. Creality’s Space Pi Filament Dryer page describes the accessory.
