Browser attacks can evade or delay endpoint detection when malicious activity blends into normal browsing, uses an extension’s granted permissions, or travels through routine web connections. This is a visibility gap—not proof that endpoint detection and response (EDR) is useless or that every product misses every browser attack. Protection depends on what browser, process, and network activity a product can observe and how it is configured.
Why browser attacks can be hard for EDR to detect
EDR monitors activity on managed devices and can detect or respond to suspicious behavior it can observe. But an attack does not always arrive as a new, obviously malicious executable. It may run through a legitimate browser process, use browser features or extension permissions, and communicate in ways that resemble ordinary web use.
A Google Chrome Enterprise report says some EDR solutions have incomplete visibility into browser-related network events. That is a vendor report, not an independent market-wide benchmark: it does not establish how often EDR misses browser attacks or how every product performs. Coverage also varies by product, configuration, and version. Google Chrome Enterprise report
Common browser attack paths
Malicious or compromised extensions
Extensions can access websites and browser APIs according to the permissions granted to them. Chrome’s developer guidance explains that content scripts interact directly with a webpage’s DOM and run in the same renderer process as the page. An extension with relevant access can therefore interact with sensitive page content as part of normal browser activity. Chrome summarizes the risk: “Extensions have access to special privileges within the browser, making them an appealing target for attackers.” Chrome for Developers: extension security

Data collection inside the browser
Microsoft documented a campaign involving malicious AI-assistant extensions that collected URLs and AI chat content, persisted by reloading with the browser, and periodically sent collected data over HTTPS. The extensions were distributed through the Chrome Web Store and worked with Chrome and Edge. Microsoft reported approximately 900,000 installs and activity across more than 20,000 enterprise tenants; those are campaign-specific observations, not estimates of how prevalent malicious extensions are overall. This incident does not mean that all store extensions are unsafe. Microsoft Defender Security Research Team
Web-delivered payloads and changing extension behavior
The Chrome Enterprise report describes attackers using HTML5 and JavaScript, including HTML smuggling, to deliver payloads. It also describes extensions whose behavior can change through dynamic configuration and obfuscated modules. Such techniques can complicate detection when a security product lacks enough browser-specific context to distinguish malicious activity from normal page or extension behavior. Built-in tools and trusted processes
Some attackers use built-in system tools or ordinary applications so their actions resemble routine activity. CISA describes living-off-the-land techniques as a way to blend malicious activity with normal system and network behavior and reduce its visibility in default logging. This is not unique to browsers, but it can make browser-related activity harder to interpret when considered without the surrounding process and event context. CISA guidance on living-off-the-land techniques
Routine-looking network traffic
HTTPS is widely used for legitimate browsing, so seeing HTTPS alone does not establish whether a connection is malicious. In Microsoft’s extension incident, periodic uploads over HTTPS were part of the reported behavior and could resemble ordinary browser communication. Encryption does not mean that every security product is blind to a connection: the available visibility depends on the product and its telemetry. Microsoft Defender Security Research Team

What endpoint protection can still do
EDR and related endpoint controls remain useful when they receive relevant telemetry or can block a known malicious connection. Microsoft documents Defender for Endpoint alerts for suspicious web connections and network protection that can block malicious or unwanted websites in Edge and other browsers. Its alerts can identify the device, requesting application, and URL, along with recommended response actions. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint web protection
Process mitigations can also restrict child-process creation in applications where that restriction is compatible. However, Microsoft warns that blocking child processes may disrupt legitimate behavior, such as an application launching a browser or another utility. Apply such restrictions selectively and test affected workflows. Microsoft guidance on attack surface reduction rules

How to reduce the browser EDR blind spot
Govern extensions and permissions
- Allow extensions only when there is a clear business need.
- Review permissions before approving an extension, and minimize access to websites and browser features where possible.
- Use browser-level policies and oversight alongside endpoint controls. Chrome’s developer guidance notes that limiting permissions limits what an attacker could exploit if an extension is compromised. Chrome for Developers: extension security
Review browser, process, and network events together
Investigate browser activity alongside process and network events rather than relying on a single alert or the fact that traffic uses HTTPS. Assess whether available telemetry shows which browser or extension initiated activity, what URL was involved, and what other device activity occurred around the same time. Some EDR solutions may have gaps in browser-related network visibility, according to the Google Chrome Enterprise report; it does not provide a neutral comparison or a universal failure rate. Google Chrome Enterprise report
Use layered web protection and response
Combine browser and endpoint controls with URL or domain investigation and a response process for suspicious connections. Microsoft’s documented Defender for Endpoint workflow illustrates how alerts can provide the device, requesting application, URL, and recommended responder actions. The detail available depends on the tools and configuration in use. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint web protection

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

Test process restrictions before broad deployment
Where child-process restrictions are appropriate, validate them against business applications first. Because legitimate software may need to launch a browser or utility, a blanket rule can break expected workflows. Microsoft guidance on attack surface reduction rules
What to check when evaluating browser protection
Rather than assuming that a product either can or cannot see browser attacks, check what it supports in your environment:
- Visibility: Can it provide useful events for browser processes, extension behavior, and requested URLs?
- Blocking: Can it block threats at the browser, endpoint, or network layer, and which browsers are covered?
- Extension governance: Can administrators control which extensions are allowed and limit permissions?
- Investigation detail: Do alerts identify the affected device, requesting application, and URL, and are the events retained long enough for investigation?
- Compatibility: Could process mitigations interfere with applications that launch browsers or other utilities?
These are useful evaluation questions, not a vendor ranking: the cited material does not establish a comparable independent test across EDR products.
