It is the most direct answer for DSLR and mirrorless photographers; a phone app that detects sudden brightness changes is another option, but it works differently.
How a camera lightning trigger works
Lightning is visible for a very short time, so a photographer can miss the shot while reacting to it. A lightning trigger senses the flash and sends a shutter-release signal to the camera. For example, Ubertronix says its original Strike Finder mounts on a DSLR hot shoe and uses an infrared sensor to detect lightning. The Lightning Trigger owner guide describes a flash-activated release mounted on the camera’s flash shoe and connected by an electronic cable release.
A trigger cannot make every camera respond instantly. The camera must support electronic shutter release through a compatible connection, and its shutter lag—the time between the release signal and the exposure—affects whether the bolt is captured. The Lightning Bug compatibility guide calls 60 milliseconds or less ideal and 120 milliseconds or less a general rule for good results with suitable flashes.

Check camera compatibility before choosing
Do not assume that a hot shoe alone is enough: it can provide a mounting point, while the camera still needs a compatible electronic shutter-release connection. Before ordering, verify:

- Your exact camera model and whether it supports electronic shutter release.
- The trigger’s cable connector, and whether the required cable is included or must be purchased separately.
- Whether the device mounts on the hot shoe, flash shoe, or requires an adapter.
- Your camera’s shutter lag. The Lightning Bug guide’s timing figures are general guidance, not a guarantee for every camera or trigger.
- Whether the trigger’s detection and delay controls suit your intended use, especially if you plan to photograph in daylight as well as at night.
For an example of how adjustment ranges can vary, the Lightning Bug Plus Advanced Settings Utility Documentation, revision 1.7.1.0 dated August 28, 2025, lists sensitivity adjustable from 1 to 26 and post-trigger delay adjustable from 0 to 90 milliseconds. Those settings apply to that documented device; they are not universal lightning-trigger specifications.
Can a phone capture lightning?
Yes. The Lightning Catcher app takes a different approach from a physical camera trigger: its App Store listing says it continuously buffers phone-camera frames, detects a sudden increase in brightness, and saves images from before, during, and after the flash. The listed workflow is to mount the phone on a tripod, arm the app, and let it monitor frame brightness. The listing says it saves 5–15 frames per strike and is free without subscriptions or in-app purchases; app features and terms can change, so check the current listing before relying on those details. A phone app is useful if you want to try automatic capture without a dedicated camera accessory. A camera trigger is the more direct fit when you want to use a compatible DSLR or mirrorless camera and its lens.

Keep the camera and trigger sheltered. The Lightning Trigger guide explicitly warns that its unit is not waterproof, and weather protection should not be assumed for other products unless their documentation confirms it. Photograph from a safe location and follow local lightning-safety guidance; do not put yourself at risk to position or adjust equipment during a storm.
