Core is now Essential, Standard is now Premium, and Ultimate is still Ultimate. For a smaller catalog and online multiplayer for paid games, Essential is the budget-minded fit. Premium offers a much larger library but not the listed day-one benefit. Ultimate is for players who will use its largest catalog, select day-one releases, cloud allowance, and bundled services. The best choice depends on the specific games you want to play—not just the catalog count.
This comparison uses Xbox’s US plan pages as accessed October 3, 2026. Names, prices, games, features, and availability can differ by market and change over time.
What changed from Core and Standard?
Xbox’s October 2025 plan update moved Core subscribers to Essential and Standard subscribers to Premium; Ultimate kept its name. The old names may still appear in older articles or conversations, but the current US comparison uses Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Xbox’s current plan overview is the place to check current offers and local availability.

Which tier fits the games you want?
Choose Essential for multiplayer and a modest catalog
Essential makes sense if the main reason you subscribe is online console multiplayer for supported paid games, with an included set of games as an added benefit. Xbox lists 50+ games across console, PC, and supported devices, plus 5 cloud hours per month in its US overview. Microsoft Store listed Essential at $9.99 per month in the US when accessed October 3, 2026; check the current checkout price for your location.
You do not need a paid tier just to play free-to-play games online: Xbox says multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. Essential’s multiplayer benefit matters for other supported games.

- Tri-mode Connectivity: Wired for Xbox, 2.4G & Wired for PC, and Bluetooth for Android. The G7 Pro supports seamless connectivity across Xbox, PC, and Android. Effortlessly switch between modes using the convenient physical mode switch.
- TMR Sticks: The G7 Pro features GameSir's Mag-Res TMR sticks, combining Hall Effect durability with traditional potentiometer performance. This advanced technology delivers stable polling rates for smooth, drift-free gaming with low power consumption.
- Hall Effect Analog Triggers: The GameSir precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unmatched smoothness and linear input for precise control. Featuring clicky Micro Switch trigger stops, gamers can easily switch based on their preferences.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate on PC: Experience ultra-responsive gaming with a 1000Hz polling rate on PC, available through both wired and 2.4G wireless connections. This ensures instantaneous input registration, reducing lag and optimizing your performance for the most competitive gameplay.
- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Choose Premium for a larger library without the listed day-one benefit
Premium is the step up if 50+ games feels restrictive and you want access to a broader rotating catalog. Xbox lists 200+ games and 10 cloud hours per month in the US. Xbox-published games are described as joining within one year of launch, but that does not mean every game arrives exactly 12 months after release; the benefit applies to select games and exclusions apply.
Choose Ultimate if you will use its full bundle
Ultimate has the largest listed catalog at 500+ games and 15 cloud hours per month in the US. Xbox also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics, alongside select day-one games. Xbox’s day-one benefit excludes Call of Duty titles from the specified new Xbox-published game offer, so do not treat it as a promise that every Xbox release launches in the tier.

How much should you pay for the upgrade?
At the time of access, Microsoft Store listed Essential at $9.99/month in the US. The retrieved current official Xbox page did not expose reliable exact US recurring prices for Premium or Ultimate, so compare their prices at the live plan page or checkout rather than relying on older prices. Introductory offers and prices can vary by market and change; subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled. Check current local plans before choosing.
- Write down the games you expect to play. Check whether they are in the live catalog for your platform and region, and whether you will play them before they leave.
- Decide whether launch access matters. If you can wait for eligible Xbox-published games, Premium may fit; if select day-one games matter, compare Ultimate’s current offer.
- Count only extras you will use. Factor in the bundled services and cloud allowance only if they are relevant to your play habits.
- Compare the local checkout prices. Choose the lowest tier that covers the games and features you will actually use.
What to know about catalogs, cloud play, and access
- Catalog access can change. Xbox says titles, counts, features, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform. You can play included games only while your subscription is active and the game remains in the library.
- Cloud allowances are monthly limits. The current US listing shows 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium, and 15 for Ultimate. Cloud gaming also requires a supported game, device, and region; hardware is sold separately.
- Check the platform carefully. Xbox describes catalog access across console, PC, and supported devices, but not every title or feature is available on every platform.
Xbox’s current plan details and caveats are on its Game Pass page. The migration from Core and Standard was announced in Xbox UK’s October 2025 update.
