MarkSync is another native-bookmark option, with accountless, on-device encryption as its focus. If you would rather build a separate searchable library, consider Raindrop.io; if you want low-maintenance syncing and use one browser everywhere, start with that browser’s built-in sync.
The right choice depends on more than whether bookmarks appear on another device. Check whether a tool syncs the browser’s own bookmark tree or maintains a separate library, where your data is stored, and how it handles conflicts. Browser support and mobile behavior can change, so verify them for your devices before moving a large collection.
How to choose an Xmarks replacement
First decide whether bookmarks must appear in the folders and bookmark bar built into Chrome, Firefox, or another browser. Floccus and MarkSync work with native browser bookmarks. Raindrop.io is a separate hosted library: it offers organization and access across devices, but it does not sync the browser’s own bookmark tree.
Then weigh storage and maintenance. A hosted service is generally simpler to start using; self-hosting or connecting your own storage can offer more control but requires you to manage that service or backend. Finally, consider whether you need bidirectional merging, one-way syncing, mobile access, or features such as tags, search, archival, and collaboration.

1. Floccus: best general Xmarks-style replacement
Floccus is the strongest starting point if you want bookmarks to remain in the browser’s native folder structure while choosing where the synced data lives. Its publisher lists Nextcloud Bookmarks, Linkwarden, KaraKeep, WebDAV, Git over HTTPS, Google Drive, and Dropbox as backends.
Its sync guide describes two-way merge syncing and unidirectional, one-way syncing. Merge is suited to devices where changes may be made in more than one place; one-way sync is useful when one source should be authoritative. Floccus also documents optional tab syncing, but that is separate from bookmark syncing.
Encryption depends on the backend. Floccus documents optional passphrase encryption for WebDAV and Google Drive. Its FAQ says end-to-end encryption is not available for its Nextcloud Bookmarks and Git methods, so do not assume that selecting Floccus encrypts every backend in the same way.

- Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Backward compatible with USB 2.0
- Secure file encryption and password protection(2)
Floccus’s FAQ lists Chromium, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi, and Orion, but not Safari. If Safari is essential, do not choose Floccus on the assumption that it supports that browser.
2. MarkSync: accountless syncing with device-side encryption
MarkSync is aimed at people who want cross-browser bookmark syncing without creating an account. MarkSync says it encrypts data on the device before it leaves, uses an anonymous sync ID, and leaves the service operator with an unreadable blob. Those are the service’s own descriptions of its security model; they are not an independent security audit.
It supports native bookmarks in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. MarkSync also describes an installable progressive web app for iOS and Android, plus descriptions, tags, search, backup, and restore. Before relying on it for a device combination, confirm that the browser and mobile workflow you use are supported.
3. Raindrop.io: best for a separate, searchable library
Choose Raindrop.io if you want to collect and organize links in a dedicated library rather than mirror browser folders. Its official download page lists a browser extension, iPhone and iPad apps, Android apps, and desktop apps for macOS and Windows. Its tags, search, and visual organization suit people who want to browse a curated collection across device types.
Rank #3
- 256GB ultra fast USB 3.1 flash drive with high-speed transmission; read speeds up to 130MB/s
- Store videos, photos, and songs; 256 GB capacity = 64,000 12MP photos or 978 minutes 1080P video recording
- Note: Actual storage capacity shown by a device's OS may be less than the capacity indicated on the product label due to different measurement standards. The available storage capacity is higher than 230GB.
- 15x faster than USB 2.0 drives; USB 3.1 Gen 1 / USB 3.0 port required on host devices to achieve optimal read/write speed; Backwards compatible with USB 2.0 host devices at lower speed. Read speed up to 130MB/s and write speed up to 30MB/s are based on internal tests conducted under controlled conditions , Actual read/write speeds also vary depending on devices used, transfer files size, types and other factors
- Stylish appearance, retractable, telescopic design with key hole
The key trade-off is that Raindrop.io is not a transparent replacement for native browser-bookmark sync: the comparison says it does not sync the browser’s own bookmark tree. Choose it for the library model, not if your requirement is to have the same native bookmark folders inside multiple browsers.
4. Neatlink: investigate if Safari and Mac matter
A comparison checked September 12, 2026 lists Neatlink with Safari support and a native Mac application, making it a candidate for readers whose setup includes Safari. Browser support, pricing, and product availability in this category can change; verify the current supported browsers and terms before migrating bookmarks.
5. xBrowserSync: an accountless option with coverage limits
The checked comparison describes xBrowserSync as requiring no account, but reports partial browser coverage and no Edge support in its matrix. That makes it worth investigating only after checking that your exact browsers are covered. Confirm the project’s current status as well as its present support list before making it the primary store for an important collection.
6. BookmarkHub: for GitHub or S3 storage interests
BookmarkHub is a candidate if you want a GitHub- or S3-backed approach, as described in the comparison matrix. That storage angle may matter more than a polished out-of-the-box experience for people who want repository or object-storage control. The available information does not establish its current browser support or maintenance status, so verify both before depending on it.

7. Linkwarden: for archiving and collaboration
Linkwarden is closer to a bookmark archive and collaboration layer than a simple browser-folder synchronizer. It can be hosted or self-hosted with a server backend, and Floccus lists it as a supported backend. Consider it when retaining and organizing saved links or collaborating matters more than making every browser’s native folders mirror each other.
8. Nextcloud Bookmarks with Floccus: for existing Nextcloud users
If you already run Nextcloud, Floccus can use Nextcloud Bookmarks as a backend. This combines browser-native bookmark syncing with a service you manage or already rely on, rather than adding another standalone bookmark host. Floccus’s FAQ says this method does not provide Floccus end-to-end encryption, so the security of the Nextcloud server and its administration matters.
9. KaraKeep with Floccus: a newer self-hosted route
Floccus lists KaraKeep as a backend, with HTTP/HTTPS bookmark support and mobile availability shown in its matrix. It may suit readers who want a newer self-hosted bookmark service, but check that the current KaraKeep and Floccus versions work together and that the backend meets your needs before migrating a collection.
10. Built-in browser sync: simplest inside one browser family
If every device can use the same browser and profile, that browser’s built-in sync is usually the lowest-maintenance option. It keeps the workflow within one ecosystem, but it is less suited to people who need their native bookmarks to stay aligned across different browsers.

Choose by your main requirement
- Native folders, cross-browser use, and storage choice: start with Floccus and select a backend and sync strategy deliberately.
- No account and encryption before data leaves the device: evaluate MarkSync, checking that your browsers and mobile setup are supported.
- Tags, search, and a dedicated visual collection: choose Raindrop.io if a separate library is acceptable.
- Safari and a Mac app: investigate Neatlink and verify current compatibility.
- Self-hosted archiving or collaboration: compare Linkwarden with a Nextcloud Bookmarks or KaraKeep setup, accounting for server maintenance.
- One browser everywhere: use that browser’s built-in sync for the simpler workflow.
Switch without losing your bookmarks
- Export a backup from your current browser. Keep the exported file somewhere separate from the new sync service so you have a recovery copy if folders are merged or duplicated unexpectedly.
- Decide whether the destination is native bookmarks or a separate library. This determines whether to configure a browser sync tool such as Floccus or MarkSync, or import links into a manager such as Raindrop.io.
- Check support for every browser and device you use. Do not infer Safari or mobile support from a product’s general cross-platform description; verify the current product documentation for your exact setup.
- Choose storage and conflict behavior before connecting multiple devices. With Floccus, select the backend and decide whether to merge changes or make one side authoritative. Review the encryption limits for that backend before uploading sensitive bookmarks.
- Test with a small set first. Add, rename, move, and delete a few test bookmarks on one device, then check how the changes appear elsewhere. Confirm that your intended sync direction and folder structure are preserved before enabling a large collection.
- Retain the backup until the new setup is stable. Use the service’s restore or import route if the test reveals missing folders or duplicates; avoid deleting the original collection until you have verified the synced result.
Are physical products a substitute?
No. The practical replacements for Xmarks are browser extensions, apps, hosted bookmark services, and backends such as WebDAV or self-hosted servers. A USB drive, NAS, or notebook might support a manual workflow, but none is itself a cross-browser bookmark-syncing service.
