Windows 11 is beginning to let external passkey managers work directly with its sign-in flow. Microsoft’s first concrete integration was 1Password in Dev Channel Build 26200.5670, released June 27, 2025. The feature is still an Insider preview, so availability depends on your Windows build, channel and rollout state.
What Microsoft added—and when
Microsoft announced its plan for a plug-in model and APIs for third-party passkey providers on October 8, 2024, naming 1Password, Bitwarden and other partners. The announcement described the platform direction, not a finished integration for every provider. Microsoft’s Windows Developer Blog
The first specific Windows Insider implementation covered here was 1Password. Microsoft’s June 27, 2025 release of Dev Channel Build 26200.5670 (KB5060838) introduced a plug-in integration for the 1Password Beta. Microsoft’s Build 26200.5670 announcement
That distinction matters: the broader API model names Bitwarden and other providers, but the cited Insider release documents the 1Password Beta integration. It does not establish that Bitwarden or every passkey manager is already selectable on every Windows 11 PC.

How to use 1Password passkeys in the Insider preview
- Install the 1Password Beta and use a Windows 11 Insider build that has received the integration.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options.
- Enable the plug-in credential manager option for 1Password, if it is available.
- Complete the Windows Hello verification prompt using your configured face, fingerprint or PIN.
- At a passkey-compatible website, choose the provider when creating or signing in with a passkey. The provider can save a new passkey or retrieve an existing one.
Microsoft’s announcement cautions that Insider features roll out gradually, often behind a toggle, and may change, be removed or never reach general availability. If the setting or provider does not appear, your device may not yet have the feature; the announcement does not promise a fixed rollout date for all users.
What Windows Hello does—and does not do
Windows Hello verifies you locally; it is not itself the third-party provider that stores or retrieves the passkey in this plug-in flow. Passkeys use public/private-key cryptography: the service receives and stores a public key, while the private key remains with the user’s passkey system. Windows Hello face recognition, fingerprint or PIN can authorize use of that private key. Because a passkey is bound to its service, it is designed to resist phishing on a fake site impersonating the real one. Microsoft Learn: Passkeys in Windows

Windows’ native passkey-management experience starts with Windows 11 version 22H2 and update KB5030310, according to Microsoft Learn. The newer provider plug-in support is a separate development: having native passkey support does not by itself mean that a specific external manager is integrated on your build.
Third-party manager, Windows Hello or FIDO2 key?
These options describe different parts of the sign-in experience rather than interchangeable products. Windows Hello can verify the local user; a provider can manage passkeys; and an external FIDO2 security key can act as a hardware authenticator in compatible Windows passkey scenarios.

| Option | Where the passkey is kept or used | Portability and recovery | What the cited Microsoft material establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Hello with Windows-managed passkeys | Windows passkey storage, with Windows Hello verifying the user. | Microsoft documents companion-device sign-in, but the cited material does not specify a universal sync or recovery model. | Native passkey management is available starting with Windows 11 version 22H2 and KB5030310. |
| Third-party passkey manager | The provider stores or retrieves the passkey; Windows Hello supplies local verification in the described plug-in flow. | Portability and recovery depend on the provider; the cited material does not establish provider-specific terms or behavior. | Microsoft announced a provider API model in October 2024 and documented the 1Password Beta Insider integration in June 2025. |
| External FIDO2 security key | The external hardware key serves as an authenticator for compatible scenarios. | Availability depends on possessing the key; Microsoft’s cited material does not specify a recovery method. | Microsoft documents external FIDO2 authenticators as an option for Windows passkey use. |
The useful choice depends on where you want passkeys available (Windows only, or also across phones and browsers), how the provider handles sync and account recovery, and whether you want to rely on built-in verification or carry hardware. Microsoft’s cited pages establish the Windows integration and authenticator roles, not current provider pricing, commercial terms or the recovery policies of individual managers.
Privacy controls and application access
Starting with Windows 11 version 24H2, applications prompt for privacy consent before accessing passkeys. To review app permissions, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Passkey access. Microsoft Learn says enterprise policies for controlling passkey-consent prompts were available in Insider builds and targeted for general availability by the end of June 2026; that target is not confirmation that the policies shipped on that date. Developers: the sample manager is not for real credentials
Microsoft’s developer documentation describes a Contoso Passkey Manager sample that can be enabled through Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options and uses Windows Hello verification. Microsoft explicitly positions the sample for testing passkey creation and use, not for production passkeys. Do not store real account credentials in it.
