You generally can’t update a graphics driver and guarantee that games won’t recompile shaders. A driver update can change the environment used to translate game shaders, so games may rebuild cached shader data afterward. The practical approach is to install the correct driver, let affected games finish rebuilding their shaders, and use a supported precompilation feature if available.

Why a driver update can trigger shader recompilation

Games and graphics drivers work together to translate shaders into instructions suitable for your GPU. After a driver update, previously cached outputs may no longer be usable, so a game can translate shaders again. NVIDIA notes that modern games may repeat shader translations after GPU driver updates (NVIDIA, March 31, 2026).

This rebuilding is not necessarily a sign that the update failed. It can cause longer loading or temporary stutter while the game prepares shaders. Cache support can speed later runs, but Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation describes cache mechanisms—not a universal setting that prevents recompilation after every driver change (Microsoft Direct3D shader caching documentation).

Update the driver, then let the game rebuild

  1. Identify your GPU and operating system. Use the vendor’s official software or support channel to select a driver for your hardware and Windows installation. The exact installation steps vary by vendor and product; use the instructions provided for your device rather than assuming one menu path applies to every GPU.
  2. Install the appropriate driver update. Avoid third-party “driver updater” or cache-cleaning utilities as a workaround for shader compilation.
  3. Open the affected game and allow shader compilation to finish. If the game displays a compilation progress screen, wait for it to complete before judging performance in demanding play. Avoid interrupting the process unless the game or vendor’s support instructions direct you to do so.
  4. Check performance again after rebuilding. If compilation happens repeatedly or the game remains abnormal, consult the game’s official support guidance and the release notes for the exact driver version before clearing caches or rolling back.

NVIDIA Auto Shader Compilation: a supported mitigation

For compatible GeForce systems, NVIDIA’s Auto Shader Compilation can rebuild DirectX 12 game shaders after a driver update while the system is idle, or when started on demand. NVIDIA describes the feature as beta and says it requires GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer; availability may depend on the system and app version (NVIDIA’s announcement).

In the NVIDIA app, check Graphics > Global Settings > Shader Cache for Auto Shader Compilation. NVIDIA’s announcement also describes a Compile Now action. Labels and navigation can change, so if the options are absent, verify current requirements and instructions in NVIDIA’s announcement or app documentation rather than assuming the feature is available on every GeForce PC.

This feature moves some rebuilding to idle time or an on-demand task; it does not mean shaders never compile. NVIDIA says first-time game installation still requires shader generation in the game.

How precompilation differs from rebuilding after an update

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a separate, conditional approach: compatible Windows systems can receive precompiled shader data through a supported storefront, GPU, and driver combination. It is not a universal option for every game or PC (Microsoft DirectX Advanced Shader Delivery).

Approach When compilation happens Compatibility and limits
NVIDIA Auto Shader Compilation After a driver update, while the system is idle or on demand. Beta; NVIDIA specifies GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer and support for DirectX 12 game shaders. It does not eliminate first-install shader generation in the game.
Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery Precompiled shader data may be delivered through a supported storefront before download, subject to the relevant configuration. Requires a compatible Windows version, GPU and driver, game, and storefront. It is not available as a universal Windows setting for every title.

When shader compilation keeps recurring

Some repeated compilation may be game- or driver-specific. Check the affected game’s support page and the release notes for the exact driver version before changing caches or reverting a driver. For example, AMD documented a historical shader-cache failure involving accented Windows usernames; that case illustrates why an unusual cache problem should be matched to the relevant driver information rather than treated as a general rule (AMD Radeon Software release notes).
