PCI Express (PCIe) is the high-speed connection that lets a computer’s processor or chipset communicate with devices such as graphics cards, NVMe SSDs, and network adapters. Each new generation raises the link’s transfer rate, while the number of lanes—shown as x1, x4, x8, or x16—sets how much data can travel at once. A device can often work with an older PCIe generation, but it will run at the fastest speed and lane width both the device and the platform support.
What is PCI Express?
PCI Express is a point-to-point serial interconnect: rather than sharing one parallel bus among several devices, it establishes links between a host (such as a processor or chipset) and connected devices. Intel describes PCIe as a standards-based, point-to-point serial interconnect used throughout computing and embedded devices.
PCIe is used for internal expansion and storage. Common examples include graphics cards, network and capture cards, and solid-state drives. The technology specifies how devices communicate and how links operate; it does not guarantee a particular application speed or determine a device’s physical size on its own.
How fast is each PCIe generation?
PCIe specifications express the link signaling rate in GT/s, or billions of transfers per second. That is not the same as GB/s, or billions of bytes per second: encoding uses some transmitted bits for overhead, and protocol activity further affects useful application throughput.

The table shows PCI-SIG’s stated transfer rate and encoding, along with the approximate x16 bandwidth per direction after encoding. The GB/s values are converted from the organization’s x16 figures in Gb/s by dividing by eight. They describe link capacity, not a guaranteed real-world benchmark.
| PCIe generation | Link rate | Encoding or signaling | x16 bandwidth per direction | Specification year listed by PCI-SIG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PCIe 1.0 | 2.5 GT/s | 8b/10b | 4 GB/s | 2003 |
| PCIe 2.0 | 5.0 GT/s | 8b/10b | 8 GB/s | 2007 |
| PCIe 3.0 | 8.0 GT/s | 128b/130b | 15.75 GB/s | 2010 |
| PCIe 4.0 | 16.0 GT/s | 128b/130b | 31.5 GB/s | 2017 |
| PCIe 5.0 | 32.0 GT/s | 128b/130b | 63 GB/s | 2019 |
| PCIe 6.0 | 64.0 GT/s | PAM4 with Flit-based encoding | 128 GB/s | 2022 |
| PCIe 7.0 | 128.0 GT/s | PAM4 with Flit-based encoding | 256 GB/s | 2025 release |
PCI-SIG’s generation figures report x16 bandwidth per direction after encoding overhead. A link can send and receive at the same time, so PCI-SIG describes PCIe 7.0 x16 as reaching up to 512.0 GB/s bi-directional bandwidth: 256 GB/s in each direction combined. It is not 512 GB/s of one-way application throughput.

After the fault is rectified, the system automatically recovers. Each port is equipped with independent capacitors that do not require an external power supply, ensuring a more stable power supply. The two interfaces can operate independently and do not interfere with each other, so the operation is more stable.
- 【Stability & Heat Dissipation】 The use of alloy materials with high thermal conductivity can effectively heat dissipation, so that the expansion card is always at room temperature and the work is more stable.
Why encoding changes the usable rate
PCIe 1.0 and 2.0 use 8b/10b encoding: for every 10 bits transmitted, 8 are payload bits. Generations 3.0 through 5.0 use the more efficient 128b/130b scheme. PCIe 6.0 and 7.0 use PAM4 signaling and Flit-based encoding, changing how data is signaled and organized. PCI-SIG’s speed table accounts for encoding when it reports bandwidth; real transfers can still be lower because of protocol overhead, device behavior, and workload.
What is current?
As of October 3, 2026, PCI-SIG lists Base Specification Revision 7.1, dated September 17, 2026, as the current base specification. PCIe 7.0 itself is listed with a June 11, 2025 release date. A published specification describes the standard; it does not mean that products supporting that generation are widely available or that a particular computer can use it.

What does PCIe x16 mean?
The number after the “x” is the number of lanes aggregated into a PCIe link. Each lane provides a data path in each direction. More lanes raise the link’s potential bandwidth at a given generation; they do not by themselves change the generation’s per-lane rate.
- x1: one lane, often used for lower-bandwidth expansion devices.
- x4: four lanes; commonly relevant to storage and some expansion cards.
- x8: eight lanes.
- x16: sixteen lanes; a common graphics-card slot width.
PCI-SIG supports x1, x2, x4, x8, and x16 link widths. A slot’s physical length does not always tell you how many lanes it is electrically connected to: a long slot may be wired for fewer lanes. The negotiated link is also constrained by the device and the platform’s available lane allocation.

Will a PCIe 4.0 card work in a PCIe 3.0 slot?
Generally, yes. PCI-SIG describes PCIe as backward compatible across generations. A PCIe 4.0 device in a PCIe 3.0-capable system can negotiate a PCIe 3.0 link, provided the card fits the slot and the system supports the required device and configuration. The link cannot run faster or wider than the mutually supported generation and lane width.
Before installing a card, check the motherboard or system documentation for the slot’s generation and electrical lane count, and confirm physical clearance and any power requirements. For an M.2 drive, check the specific M.2 socket rather than assuming every socket on a board supports the same interface or generation.

Is an NVMe SSD using PCIe?
NVMe is a storage interface specification for communication between a host and non-volatile memory across a PCIe bus. An NVMe SSD therefore uses PCIe as its transport. M.2 is a compact form factor and connector used for storage, but the M.2 shape alone does not prove that a drive is NVMe or PCIe; M.2 devices can use different interfaces.
What to check before choosing an M.2 NVMe SSD
- Socket compatibility: Verify the motherboard’s M.2 keying and supported drive type in its manual.
- Generation and lanes: Confirm which PCIe generation and lane width the socket supports. A faster drive can operate at a lower compatible link rate, but the platform sets the ceiling.
- Capacity and physical fit: Match the drive capacity and module size to the system’s supported specifications.
- Cooling: Check whether the motherboard includes an M.2 heatsink and whether the drive’s cooling needs suit the available space.
- Operating-system and boot support: Confirm the system firmware and operating system support the intended installation or boot configuration.
Where else is PCIe used?
Graphics cards
Graphics cards commonly use PCIe expansion slots, often with an x16 physical connector. The actual link width and generation depend on the card and platform. A high theoretical x16 rate is not a promise of a proportional increase in graphics performance: results depend on the workload, the GPU, and how the platform connects its components.
PCIe-to-M.2 adapter cards
A PCIe-to-M.2 adapter can let a compatible M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive use an expansion slot. Before buying one, verify the adapter’s lane wiring and the available slot, and check whether the computer supports booting from an NVMe drive installed through that adapter. The adapter does not add lanes or make the drive faster than the platform’s supported link.
Other storage form factors
PCI-SIG’s architecture material identifies M.2 and U.2 among PCIe storage form factors. M.2 is a compact connector suited to dense storage or boot-drive designs; U.2 uses a 2.5-inch device form factor. Enterprise systems also use EDSFF variants. Form factor describes packaging and connection, not by itself the PCIe generation or guaranteed speed.

The move to PAM4 signaling and Flit-based encoding in PCIe 6.0 and 7.0 raises transfer rates but also makes signal integrity and interoperability more demanding. PCI-SIG’s materials include PHY, link-layer, configuration-space, and retimer test specifications; Tektronix describes PHY validation and compliance/interoperability testing as part of engineering PCIe systems. These concerns matter to designers validating links, but they do not change how a user should interpret a device’s generation and lane count.
