Run your printer’s nozzle check or print-quality test before deciding. Gaps or broken lines in the test pattern point to a printhead cleaning; an empty or faulty cartridge calls for replacement. After cleaning, print the test again and follow your printer’s model-specific instructions if the problem remains.
Start with a print-quality test
Faded text, missing colors, streaks, and broken lines can have different causes. A nozzle check or print-quality page helps distinguish a clogged printhead from a cartridge that is empty or reporting a fault. Use the maintenance menu or app for your exact printer model; menu names and steps vary by model and software version.
Epson’s model-specific manual says a pattern with no gaps indicates a clean printhead, while faint or interrupted lines indicate that cleaning is needed. See the Epson printer manual for its nozzle-check guidance. Treat that procedure as an Epson example, not a universal menu sequence.
When to clean the printhead
Clean the printhead when the diagnostic pattern shows gaps, faint sections, or broken lines consistent with clogged nozzles. Start the built-in cleaning procedure from the printer or its software, then run another nozzle check or inspect the resulting test page. If the pattern improves but still shows defects, consult the printer’s instructions before deciding whether another cycle is appropriate.

Epson’s manual describes running its cleaning utility and checking the nozzle pattern afterward. It also warns not to turn the printer off or open its front cover during the cleaning cycle. For the DeskJet 2900, 4300, 5100, and 5800 families, HP’s print-quality troubleshooting guide directs users to load plain paper, start cleaning through the HP app’s print-quality tools, and assess the test page. For those covered models, HP says to wait at least 30 minutes before running a further cleaning if needed. Follow your own printer’s current support guidance rather than applying another model’s timing or steps.
When to replace the cartridge
Replace a cartridge when it is empty or faulty and printing requires it. HP also suggests replacing a very low cartridge if you want a full supply for unattended printing; otherwise, the timing depends on your needs. HP advises removing a cartridge only when you are ready to install its replacement. See HP’s ink cartridge replacement guidance for its instructions.

Use the cartridge number specified for your exact printer model. A brand name or color alone is not enough to establish compatibility, and no single cartridge number applies to every printer. Check the model’s manual or official support page before buying.
Check cartridge status before cleaning
A low or empty cartridge can affect whether maintenance is available. Epson says its printer will not clean the printhead when a cartridge is expended and may prevent cleaning when ink is low; an expended cartridge must be replaced first. If the printer blocks cleaning, check its displayed cartridge status and the model-specific instructions instead of trying to force the procedure.

What to do if cleaning does not fix the print
Recheck the test page after the prescribed cleaning. If the defects remain, use the troubleshooting steps for the exact model or contact the manufacturer’s support rather than repeatedly running cycles without checking. Cleaning may use ink, and a cycle is not a guaranteed repair.
Do not transfer manual-cleaning directions between models. HP cautions users not to touch the nozzle plate or electrical contacts in its relevant procedures, and its advice about cleaning around a nozzle applies to specific visible-smear cases—not to clearing clogged nozzles. Use manual handling only when the instructions for your printer explicitly describe it. HP’s broader print-quality troubleshooting guide is also limited to the printer families it covers.

Choose the next step from the evidence
| What you find | Next step |
|---|---|
| Nozzle pattern has gaps, faint areas, or broken lines; cartridge status permits cleaning | Run the model’s built-in printhead-cleaning procedure, then inspect a fresh test. |
| Cartridge is empty or faulty | Replace it with the cartridge specified for the exact printer model; check whether replacement is required before maintenance. |
| Printer reports low ink and blocks cleaning | Check the model’s instructions. Some printers may restrict cleaning at low ink; Epson says an expended cartridge must be replaced first. |
| Defects remain after the model’s cleaning procedure | Follow that model’s further troubleshooting or support guidance; do not assume more cycles will solve it. |
