A board that floats, a leash, or strong swimming ability is not a substitute for a PFD. The right leash, clothing, and other equipment depend on whether you are paddling flatwater, surf, or moving water.
What safety gear do you need before paddleboarding?
- A wearable PFD: Choose one that fits you, suits the activity, and is in serviceable condition. Follow its label and the manufacturer’s care instructions.
- A sound signal: Carry a whistle or another emergency sound device, and check local requirements.
- Waterproof communication: Keep a way to call for help protected from water. A phone in waterproof storage is one option, but do not assume you will have coverage or that help can reach you quickly.
- Immersion-appropriate clothing: Dress for the water temperature and the possibility of falling in, not only for the air temperature.
- A leash only when appropriate: Leash practice varies by waterway. In rivers, a leash can snag and create an entrapment hazard.
The U.S. Coast Guard recommends wearing an approved wearable life jacket while underway. The American Canoe Association (ACA) likewise advises: “A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is worn, always, while paddling.” That is ACA safety guidance, not a statement of law that applies identically to every paddler or waterway. Check the rules for your location and circumstances.
For context, the Coast Guard reported 564 recreational-boating deaths nationwide in 2023; three-quarters were drownings, and 87% of those drowning victims were not wearing life jackets. There is no single safe equipment setup for every paddleboard outing. Before choosing a venue or launching, consider the following differences:

Local instruction can help you select a leash setup for the specific waterway and learn how to respond if you fall. Do not treat the presence of a quick-release leash as a guarantee against entanglement.
How should a PFD fit, and what should you check?
Wear a properly fitted, appropriately sized wearable PFD, and follow its label for use and restrictions. Inspect it before each outing for damage or other signs it may not be serviceable. Maintain inflatable models according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not assume every inflatable style is appropriate for every beginner, venue, or water condition.

For foam-filled life jackets, Coast Guard guidance says the fit should be snug and the jacket should not ride above the chin or ears. Its recommendations and fit guidance are available in the Coast Guard life-jacket guidance and Boating Safety Circulars. Check the applicable rules with your state or local boating authority; requirements can vary with jurisdiction, age, craft classification, and activity.
What should you check before launching?
- Check the forecast and water conditions. Look at current weather, wind, waves, water temperature, and current or tide where relevant. Identify hazards, access points, and how far the route takes you from shore. Postpone if the weather prevents the outing or the conditions exceed your skill.
- Choose a manageable route and backup. Select a venue and route that fit your abilities, and identify an alternative plan if conditions change. ACA safety checkpoints recommend checking weather and wind, having a backup plan, reviewing self-rescue, and using a buddy system: ACA safety checkpoints.
- Wear and inspect your PFD. Confirm the fit, label, and condition, and check that any maintenance or service requirements are current.
- Dress for immersion. Plan for the temperature of the water and the possibility that you will fall in, even on a warm, sunny day.
- Pack communication and a sound signal. Protect your communication device from water and carry a whistle or other emergency sound device. A 2025 Coast Guard release for the Pacific Northwest advised carrying at least two waterproof ways to call for help; that regional guidance should not be mistaken for a universal rule or a guarantee of rescue: Coast Guard Pacific Northwest safety release.
- Tell someone your plan. Give a reliable person your route and expected return time. Beginners should favor conservative conditions, company, and instruction.
- Review the leash decision. Match your approach to the waterway, and get local instruction if you are unsure. Do not carry a river leash assumption over to surf or flatwater, or vice versa.
- Practice self-rescue before you need it. In controlled conditions, practice falling in and getting back onto the board. Learn basic strokes and self-rescue before paddling farther from shore.
What should beginners learn before going farther from shore?
Learn basic board control, strokes, and how to re-enter after a fall in a controlled setting. A swim test alone is not a substitute for a PFD or for knowing how cold water, wind, and distance can affect your ability to get back to shore.
