To see which apps can access your data or control your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security and review the apps listed in each permission category. Start with broad permissions such as Full Disk Access, Accessibility, and Automation, then check screen recording, input monitoring, files and folders, and the personal data categories you care about. Turn off grants an app no longer needs.
How do I see which apps have access to my Mac?
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll through the categories and open each one to see which apps are listed and have access. The available categories and their labels can differ by macOS version. Apple’s privacy settings overview describes the categories available in System Settings.
- Review high-impact permissions first: Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, Input Monitoring, Screen & System Audio Recording, Files & Folders, and App Management.
- Check data-specific categories relevant to your apps, including Camera, Microphone, Photos, Contacts, Calendars, and Location Services.
- For each app, consider whether you recognize it, whether the permission makes sense for its purpose, and whether you still use the feature. Switch off access you no longer want to grant.
On macOS 12 and earlier, use Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Apple’s platform security guidance distinguishes this older path from the System Settings path used in macOS 13 and later. Follow the controls shown on your installed version.
Which apps can control my Mac?
Some categories concern an app’s ability to control the Mac or other apps, rather than simply read a particular kind of personal data.

What does Full Disk Access mean on Mac?
Full Disk Access is a broad grant. Apple says it can include access to files across the computer; data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, and Safari; the Home folder; Time Machine backups; and certain administrative settings for every user on the Mac. Check this category carefully and retain access only for an app you recognize, trust, and have a reason to use with that reach. See Apple’s explanation of access to files and folders.

How do I check which apps can access my files?
Review both Files & Folders and Full Disk Access. Files & Folders can grant access to specific locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents; Full Disk Access has the broader scope described above. Apple explains the Files & Folders controls in its file and folder access instructions.
In the relevant category, switch off the listed app’s access if it no longer needs it. Apple notes that third-party apps’ handling of information is governed by their own terms and privacy policies, so a permission list does not tell you everything about an app’s data practices. Check the developer’s policy as well as the app’s purpose.

How do I stop an app from recording my screen?
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, select the app, and switch off its access. The category also covers audio-only recording. If you use macOS 12 or earlier, find the corresponding privacy controls in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy; labels can vary by release. Apple’s instructions for screen and system audio recording cover reviewing and changing app access.
What to do if an app stops working after revoking access
If a legitimate feature stops working, return to the permission category and consider restoring access only if that feature requires it and you trust the app. For Accessibility access, Apple says the app prompts for permission and that you can later review the grant in settings. Do not restore a broad grant simply because an app asks; first verify that the request matches the function you intend to use.

What this audit can—and cannot—tell you
The Privacy & Security lists show permission grants on your Mac. They are not proof that an app has never accessed data, a complete inventory of its network activity, or a substitute for checking its privacy policy. Apple says third-party information collection is governed by the third party’s terms and privacy policies. Its Platform Security guide states that Apple believes users should have full transparency, consent, and control over what apps do with their data.
Repeat the review after installing or removing software and when an app requests an unexpectedly broad permission. macOS provides the audit controls built into the system; this task does not require a separate product or accessory.
