Nota is a macOS beta app for browsing, creating, and editing local Markdown files. You can make notes, link them with Markdown or wiki-link syntax, and keep the files in Dropbox or another folder so they remain accessible in other plain-text apps. Nota itself is currently described as a macOS app; its documentation’s phone workflow uses other apps to edit the same files.
What is Nota?
Nota is a notes and text-editing app built around regular local Markdown files. Its official product page describes uses such as notes, todo lists, articles, journals, wikis, and second-brain or Zettelkasten workflows. The product emphasizes local files rather than an account-bound notes database, and says there is no account or subscription requirement and no vendor lock-in.
That file-first approach matters if you want to keep control of your notes or open them in more than one app. It also means Nota’s workflow is centered on editing and navigating text files, rather than requiring you to store all content in a proprietary service.
How do you create a note in Nota?
Nota offers several ways to start a note, depending on whether you want a blank draft, a file in a particular folder, or a note connected to something you are already writing. The documented shortcuts below use Mac keyboard notation.

Create a draft or a note in a folder
- Press ⇧⌘N to create a draft, then press ⌘S to save it.
- To create a note in a specific location, use the folder’s context menu.
Create a linked note as you write
Type a wiki link such as [[example]] and follow the link. If the note does not exist, Nota can create it. This is useful when you want to capture a related idea without leaving the note you are editing.
Use Quick Open or Find or Create
- In File → Quick Open, enter a name and press ⌃↵ to create a note from the current input.
- Press ⌘N to use Find or Create. Enter a note name; Nota shows similar notes as you type while keeping the current note visible.
Find or Create can help you notice an existing note that already covers the subject, reducing the chance of making duplicates.

Can Nota edit Markdown files?
Yes. Nota is designed to work with local Markdown files, and its product page describes the files as regular Markdown that can also be managed in Finder or opened in other plain-text apps. You are not limited to notes created inside a Nota-only storage format.
For writing and navigation, Nota supports standard Markdown links as well as the shorter [[wiki-link]] style. Its wiki-link features include backlinks, shortcuts for following a link or jumping to backlinks, and automatic link updates when you rename a linked file.

The editor also lists multiple selections, expand-selection behavior, context-aware completions, visual hints, and quick dialogs with fuzzy matching for opening files, searching, and commands. Nota describes its editing as true plain-text editing, making the text-file model central to the experience.
Does Nota work with Dropbox?
Yes. Nota’s documentation says you can keep its Markdown files in a Dropbox folder or another cloud folder. The files remain plain-text Markdown; Dropbox provides a place to store and sync them rather than turning them into a Nota-specific database. For phone access, Nota’s documentation describes opening those same files with Dropbox or another app that can work with plain-text or Markdown files. That is a way to edit Nota’s files on a phone; it is not evidence of a Nota mobile app.

The official product page currently describes Nota as a beta for macOS and invites interested users to request a waitlist invitation. The reviewed official information does not establish a public Windows, Linux, Android, or iOS release or a release schedule for those platforms. For phone use, the documented option is to open the Markdown files in another compatible app.

Are Nota files portable?
Yes. Nota’s portability comes from storing notes as ordinary Markdown files. You can keep them in a folder, manage them in Finder, place them in Dropbox or another cloud folder, and open them with apps that handle plain text. That makes the underlying text less dependent on Nota than content stored only in a proprietary notes database.
Portability does not mean every app will reproduce Nota’s full workflow. Other editors may open the text and Markdown links, but Nota-specific navigation features such as its backlinks and automatic link updates depend on Nota. If you rely on wiki links, check how another app handles that syntax before moving your everyday editing there.
Who is Nota best suited to?
Nota is a natural fit for Mac users who want a focused Markdown editor and prefer notes that remain accessible as files. Its combination of wiki links, backlinks, quick navigation, and file portability may suit linked-note systems as well as straightforward journals, task lists, and writing.
