To get started, identify Sprout’s display, touch mat and overhead Illuminator, complete the Windows setup, then open Sprout Workspace and its Getting Started app. HP’s support hub is the right place to find setup documents for your Sprout generation; Sprout Companion is optional and only works with specific Lync or Skype for Business versions.
What you need to know about Sprout
Sprout is an all-in-one computer designed to bring physical objects into digital work. It has a conventional touch display and a separate touch mat; an overhead Sprout Illuminator combines a projector, high-resolution camera and Intel RealSense 3D camera for capturing objects. The original HP datasheet describes a 20-inch diagonal touch mat with 20-point touch input. Those specifications are from HP’s 2015 commercial datasheet and can vary by model. HP Sprout datasheet
How to set up Sprout for first use
- Identify the hardware. Find the main display, touch mat and overhead Illuminator/camera assembly. Leave the mat clear while setting up and calibrating.
- Connect the essentials. Attach the supplied power adapter, keyboard and mouse, and connect to a network if needed. Start Windows and complete its on-screen setup. HP’s original configuration included a wireless keyboard and optical mouse; bundled accessories can vary by generation. HP Sprout datasheet
- Choose the matching HP setup guide. Go to the HP Sprout Pro support page and open the Start Here document and User Guide. HP’s page also lists Windows 10, Sprout Companion and operating-system reinstallation or custom-image guides. Use documents that match your Sprout generation and installed Windows state rather than assuming instructions for one version apply to all Sprout systems.
- Open Sprout Workspace. Workspace is HP’s central creative environment for capturing and manipulating objects and making crafts. HP also identifies a Getting Started app to introduce the Sprout experience. HP Sprout datasheet
- Test a basic capture. Place a small, non-reflective object on the touch mat and follow the capture workflow in Workspace. The available software and results depend on the model and its installation; do not assume every current Windows feature or app will work on an older Sprout.
- Add a stylus only if you need one. HP’s original documentation names the Adonit Jot Pro for writing and drawing. It also describes the stylus attaching magnetically to the display’s upper-right side in that configuration. Confirm the exact Sprout model and stylus before buying a replacement. HP Sprout datasheet
Where to find Sprout Workspace
Workspace is the core Sprout software named in HP’s original documentation. Start by checking the installed apps in Windows and looking for the Getting Started app. If Workspace is absent, use HP’s Sprout support and driver channels rather than installing software intended for a different generation.
An HP Support Community response dated June 4, 2020 points owners to the HP Sprout Pro Workspace driver page and suggests HP Support Assistant for checking updates, drivers and applications. Treat that community post as a historical pointer: verify that any download matches your device generation and Windows installation before installing it. HP’s Sprout Pro support page is also the hub for manuals and recovery guidance.

When to install Sprout Companion
Sprout Companion is optional collaboration software, not a requirement for using Workspace. HP documents it for supported Lync and Skype for Business installations. Before seeking the utility, confirm that one of these versions is already installed:
- Lync 2013 or Lync 2013 SP1
- Skype for Business 2015
- Skype for Business 2016 version 16.0.6528.1017 or earlier
HP’s guide says to download Companion from Sprout Marketplace. When running, it starts with Windows, docks new Lync or Skype for Business conversations in its own window and can switch video devices. Its Capture button takes a 2D capture of objects on the touch mat and can upload scans as conversation attachments. Basic Sprout Companion troubleshooting
If Companion does not work, check the service and application versions before reinstalling software:
- Verify that SproutService is running.
- Confirm that a supported Lync or Skype for Business version is installed and running.
- Restart SproutService and Lync or Skype for Business.
- If the problem continues, restart the computer.
