It can emulate systems up to Dreamcast and PSP at full speed in the project’s reported configuration, but it is a fabrication-heavy build—not a ready-to-play console or a practical way to emulate newer systems such as GameCube and Wii.
What is Retro Lite CM4?
Retro Lite CM4 is a joint project by StonedEdge and Dmcke5. Rather than putting a standard Raspberry Pi board in a generic case, it combines a CM4 with custom electronics, controls, cooling and an enclosure designed specifically for the handheld. The shell is machined from anodized 6061 aluminum and takes visual cues from the Switch Lite. Raspberry Pi’s project feature and the project repository document the design.
What hardware does it include?
The CM4 supplies the BCM2711-based compute platform. The repository documents 2GB of LPDDR4-3200 memory, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5, along with optional overclocking. The completed handheld’s principal components and features are:
- A 5-inch-class, 800×480 HDMI TFT display with IPS viewing characteristics and tempered-glass protection.
- Dual analog sticks and custom controls, including resin-cast buttons.
- Stereo speakers, headphone switching and a WM8960 I2S audio amplifier.
- Mini-HDMI output and USB-C charging.
- A custom 4000mAh Li-Po battery design.
- Custom cooling and multiple purpose-built circuit boards.
The electronics are more involved than a single carrier board: the documented design includes a four-layer all-in-one carrier, left and right controller boards, a button daughterboard, a USB hub, battery-management components and a fuel gauge, HDMI conversion, and SD storage. The display and battery specifications describe this particular project; they do not mean any 5-inch HDMI panel or generic battery will fit without checking dimensions, connections and protection requirements.

How well can it emulate games?
Raspberry Pi reported full-speed emulation up to Dreamcast and PSP and about four hours of gameplay for the completed handheld in its 2022 feature. Those are project-reported results, not a guarantee for every game, emulator image, overclock or battery condition. The maker’s quoted assessment likewise notes that some games have compatibility issues. Raspberry Pi’s report and Hackster.io’s interview coverage describe the project-era performance claims.
Do not buy or build it expecting reliable sixth-generation emulation. The repository says GameCube, Wii and 3DS are currently unplayable on the CM4. These are maintainer-stated capability limits for the project, not an exhaustive test of every software configuration. The repository is the source for that compatibility note.

What does building one involve?
The files are open, but the device is not a simple assembly of off-the-shelf parts. A builder needs to source a CM4 and electronic components, fabricate four custom PCBs, make or obtain the enclosure and controls, assemble the hardware, and configure the software. The project repository publishes CAD and STL files, Gerbers, source code and setup notes; it recommends a four-layer-capable board fabrication service such as JLCPCB, but the recommendation is not a guarantee that a board will work without validation or rework.
Software setup is also hands-on. The documented route uses RetroPie’s Raspberry Pi 4/400 compatibility, with Lakka and Batocera also named as possible images. The instructions cover audio drivers, WiringPi-based utilities, a configuration file and the Retro Lite on-screen display code. The maintainers warn that some code was unfinished in the project documentation and WiringPi is deprecated, so builders should be prepared to troubleshoot rather than expect a turnkey install. Can you buy a Retro Lite CM4?
The maintainers say they do not generally sell kits. They have indicated that occasional commissions may be offered through social media, but the project documentation establishes no current price, inventory or commission schedule. Treat it as a community DIY design unless you can verify a specific, current offer directly with the makers. The project FAQ contains their availability statement.

Retro Lite CM4 makes most sense for a maker who values the custom metal enclosure, published design files and the challenge of building a distinctive portable system. It is a poor fit if the priority is an inexpensive, immediately usable handheld or emulation beyond the project’s Dreamcast/PSP-class ceiling.

| What matters | Retro Lite CM4 | Mass-produced retro handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Emulation target | Project reports up to Dreamcast and PSP at full speed; GameCube, Wii and 3DS are stated as unplayable on CM4. | Varies by model; compare a specific device’s tested compatibility rather than assuming a class-wide ceiling. |
| Effort | Requires custom boards, fabrication, assembly and software setup. | Typically sold ready to play, though setup and configuration still vary by product. |
| Openness and repair | CAD, Gerbers and source code are published in the project repository. | Depends on manufacturer; designs and board files are not necessarily public. |
| Display and I/O | 800×480 display, mini-HDMI output and USB-C charging are documented. | Specifications and ports depend on the chosen model. |
| Availability | DIY project; makers say kits are not generally sold, with occasional commissions possible. | Retail availability depends on model and region. |
For a build, the CM4 is the core compute component. A compatible 800×480 HDMI display and a correctly specified Li-Po battery are other component categories to investigate, but the project uses a custom battery pack: a generic cell is not guaranteed to fit or include the required protection circuitry. Use the repository’s design files and component details to verify compatibility before purchasing parts.
