Murata Manufacturing and Ansoft released a free library for Ansoft Designer in 2004, giving RF designers ready-to-use equivalent models for Murata surface-mount capacitors and coil inductors. The models were intended to make high-frequency simulations more representative of actual Murata parts than generic approximations.

What was the Murata and Ansoft component library?

It was a downloadable software library of Murata passive components for Ansoft Designer—not a new hardware product or a standalone design application. The library contained proprietary equivalent simulation models for Murata surface-mount capacitors and coil inductors. Contemporary reports appeared on March 25, 2004, from EEPower and April 2, 2004, from EETimes.

Murata offered the library as a free download from its website. Murata maintained the models and provided upgrades; Ansoft handled customer support for Ansoft Designer.

What did the library contain and how did designers use it?

The library provided manufacturer-authorized models for capacitors and inductors, components commonly used in RF circuits and subsystems. Designers could search for parts by size, name, performance data, or other specifications, then add a selected component to a design.

That workflow brought component selection and simulation closer together: rather than start with a generic substitute or create a model from scratch, an engineer could use a model supplied by the component manufacturer during schematic and high-frequency design work. EETimes quoted Murata describing the aim this way: “This library improves design accuracy by supplying vendor-authorized device models directly as ready-to-use components.”

Why did manufacturer-authorized models matter?

Passive components do not behave identically across all frequencies and operating conditions. A generic approximation may not represent a particular part as well as a model based on that manufacturer’s device. Using a Murata-authorized equivalent model could therefore help designers evaluate component choices with more realistic behavior earlier in the RF design process.

The 2004 announcements describe the accuracy benefit qualitatively. They do not report a measured accuracy percentage, time saving, adoption count, or other quantified performance result, so the library’s benefit should not be expressed as a numerical improvement.

How does the 2004 library compare with Murata’s current model libraries?

The broad idea—making Murata component models available within electronic-design workflows—continues, but current offerings differ in host software, model types, coverage, and access. The figures below are those Murata published for the named libraries; they are not directly comparable measures of simulation accuracy.

What changed—and what stayed the same?

EDA host and workflow

The 2004 library was a download for Ansoft Designer. Murata’s later announcements describe models pre-installed in selected Cadence tools or accessible to users within Ansys workflows, reducing the separation between finding a model and using it in a design environment.

Model types and component coverage

The original reports describe proprietary equivalent models but do not specify dynamic behavior such as temperature or DC-bias dependence. Murata’s current Ansys page distinguishes dynamic from static equivalent models. Those categories and their counts indicate broader model offerings, not a like-for-like accuracy comparison with the 2004 library.

Maintenance and access

In 2004, Murata maintained the model library while Ansoft supported its design software. For current libraries, access and integration depend on the host environment and the particular Murata offering; the cited announcements do not establish that every model is available in every tool or through identical update arrangements.
