Sony redesigned PlayStation 5 packaging to use less plastic and more fibre-based material. For the original PS5 launch in 2020, Sony reported that console and accessory packaging was 93–99% fibre-based by weight. The changes included replacing plastic and expanded-polystyrene trays with card and paper-pulp supports, and swapping plastic cable ties for paper ones. That does not mean every package is plastic-free or recyclable everywhere: the figures vary by product and region, and local recycling facilities matter.
What changed in PS5 packaging?
Sony’s stated aim was to reduce packaging material and plastic while keeping products protected in transit. Its redesign focused on replacing individual plastic components rather than making a claim that every part of every PS5 package is plastic-free.
- Trays and cushioning: Card inserts and paper-pulp cushion trays replaced expanded polystyrene and plastic trays.
- Cable ties: Paper ties replaced plastic cable ties.
- Protection bags: Sony removed plastic bags for cables and instruction manuals where feasible.
- Accessory boxes: Closed card boxes replaced plastic display windows.
- Hanger tabs: Folding tabs replaced glued hanger tabs.
- Console handle: Sony removed the plastic carrying handle on the latest slim PS5 model.
Sony describes these changes in its PlayStation sustainability information and environmental reporting.
How much of the packaging is fibre-based?
The percentages are by weight, not by the number of components or the share of the box that looks like paper. Sony’s reported figures differ by product, model, region and reporting period.

The figures come from Sony’s own reporting: its PlayStation sustainability information and corporate environmental reporting. The Europe-specific slim-console percentages should not be treated as universal figures for every market or packaging revision.
Does “eco-friendly” mean the packaging is recyclable?
Sony says the packaging materials are designed to be recyclable, but it qualifies that claim: whether a material can actually be recycled depends on suitable facilities in the local area. Check your municipality’s recycling guidance before putting a particular tray, insert or other packaging component in a recycling bin. A high fibre-based share by weight does not guarantee that every component is accepted by every local recycling program.

Is PS5 packaging plastic-free?
No. Sony’s 2021 statement put PS5 packaging at 93–99% plastic-free overall by weight, depending on the product. That leaves room for some plastic, and the percentage is not a count of plastic-free boxes. Sony’s later fibre-based percentages use a different description, so the two measures should not be treated as interchangeable.
In Sony’s words, “The materials used for the PS5 console and accessories packaging are designed to be recyclable, and depending on the product, PS5 packaging per unit is between 93-99% plastic-free overall (by weight).”

What these figures do—and do not—show
The published numbers describe packaging composition by weight and identify specific materials Sony says it replaced. They do not, by themselves, quantify the packaging’s full environmental impact across manufacturing, transport and disposal. Sony’s statements are company reporting; the cited material does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment of the redesign.
To assess the claim for a particular box, distinguish its fibre-based share from its remaining plastic components, check which PS5 model and region the figure covers, and follow local recycling rules for each material.
